Select folder in My Pictures
View as film strip
Double click an image
Image appears in Windows Picture & Fax Viewer
Click on the edit icon in toolbar "Closes this program and opens the image
for editing (Ctrl + E)"
I am returned to the film strip and not an edit window
How do I rectify this please?

Hi,

Does paint open if you select it from the start/programs/accessories menu?
If it does, can you click file/open and load the picture for editing?

Thanks for your reply Rick:
I can open Paint via start/programs/accessories and load picture via
file/open.

I can also right click image in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and click
Open with and select Paint to achieve the same result.

But both are workarounds.

Any idea why clicking the toolbar edit icon in Fax Viewer doesn't work?

For some reason it has just stopped functioning whereas it's been OK for
months.

Thanks again.

Two possibilities that I can think of:

1. Default image editor not set properly in the registry
2. A third-party shell extension is blocking the "Edit" feature

For Case 1:
Change the default image editor application, invoked from Windows Picture and Fax Viewer:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/imgeditor.htm

For Case 2:
Use the ShellExView tool:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
( Ignore the document title )

Thanks Ramesh.

I tried the imgeditor.htm utility under
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/imgeditor.htm

Unfortunately the problem remains.

I have yet to try the ShellExView alternative that you have suggested.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Please go ahead and try ShellExView, and post back.

Hi Ramesh:

Finally got round to trying:

ShellExViewTool at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm

Found 14 extensions (highlighted in pink). For each extension:-

1. Disabled extension
2. From My Pictures - loaded picture into Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
3. Tried to open image (Ctrl+E) in default Paint
4. If unsuccessful (i.e. if returned to My Pictures) return to
ShellExViewTool and enabled extension.

Unfortunately problem not solved.

Given that there are other ways to open an image for editing, I think I'll
abandon this subject.

Thanks for your interest.
