HELP - Cannot Disable Network Connection, After Updates

On 2/10/2010 several MS Updates came up and I installed them.

After that I found out I could NOT disable my Network Connection
(right-click Taskbar Tray icon, select Disable).

I the a dialog (screenshot at link below)...

"It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This
connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support
Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the
system account."

Note that BEFORE I installed the updates on the same day I COULD
enable/disable my Network Connection with no problem.

I look at all the descriptions of the updates for that day (via MS
"Security Bulletin Search") and note that several have to do with
privileges.

Any ideas?

You probably need to update your LAN drivers but to be sure I'd take it
to an IT Technician or Computer Systems Specialist in your area.

No, it's not the drivers. I.ve use this system for years without a
problem AND this problem did NOT happen in the morning of the same day
I installed the updates.

The updates changed something.

It MAY have to do with my "BitDefender Antivirus 2009" and it's
Automatic Update function. One of the privilege updates may have
blocked BitDefender.

Also, I AM the "IT Technician or Computer Systems Specialist" of
course (my sig).

I was trying to figure out what happened recently to give me the error
when I try to disable my LAN.

The only thing different from yesterday to today is MS updates.

If I figure it out I'll let you know.

HEADS UP - Note that it's not just me having this symptom. Tecknomage

I still suspect it is one of the updates "protecting" against
"elevation of privileges." The fix is blocking something REQUIRED by
network related software or hardware drivers (NOT a threat).

Updates (2/10/2010) specifically related to elevating privileges:

KB978037 (applies to CSRSS)
KB977165 (applies to Kernel)

Updates of that day that deal with Remote Code Executions:

KB975713
KB978251
KB977935
KB978262
KB971468

UPDATE 2/17/2010

Just in case the problem was caused by my VIA Rhine II Ethernet
Adapter, I tried a USB Ethernet Adapter. Same problem, same dialog
message.

I cannot disable the Network Connection to the USB Ethernet Adapter.

To restate issue.....

Cannot disable any Network Connection, get dialog msg:

Above is my original post about this problem.

** FOUND SOLUTION ** (this is one of those "Google is your friend"
finds)

1) Boot to Safe Mode (no networking)

2) Open Command Prompt and enter > net stop cryptsvc
Close dialog when stopped.

3) My Computer and find C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2

4) Rename CatRoot2 -> OLDCatRoot2

5) Reboot normally

This rebuilds CatRoot2.

** Now I CAN Disable/Enable a Network Connection!

Now you can delete folder OLDCatRoot2.
