Hello

I haven't got any System restore Points. Whenever I try to use System
Restore the only System Restore Point is one created as I open System
Restore. This morning I created three System restore points at hourly
intervals however when I looked, just now, they have all gone & I have only
one and that one created as I opened the program. I'm running Win XP SP3 &
have allocated 12% of my hard disk (nearly 6GB) for System Restore. For
quite a while I had only been able to use System Restore to restore in Safe
Mode & now I can't even do that. Any ideas please?

Presumably, you have a 50GB hard drive? If so, how much free space is on
there? (If there is more than one partition on this drive, report the
sizes and amount of free space on each.)

Also, note that certain programs interfere with System Restore (e.g.,
Zone Alarm and Norton). For more info:

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

Some people have reported success using System Restore in Safe Mode
*with Command Prompt*:

Along with what Daave posted, if you are running ZoneAlarm Internet Security
Suite version 9.1.507.000, that is probably your problem. Uninstall that
version, then do a clean install of version 9.1.008.000. Back up your
security settings first, then when you install the earlier version (if you
wish to), restore those settings and you won't have to set everything up
again.
If you don't want to use ZA any more, you could always enable the Windows
firewall and download and install Microsoft Security Essentials
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ .

Thank you. The hard disk is nearer 240GB and contains 6 partitions. I give
below the sizes of each partition followed by the used space & then the free
space. As you can see I've got lots of free space on each partition.

It is interesting you mentioned Zone Alarm as I am using Zone Alarm Internet
Security Suite but this hasn't "lost" restore point in the past

I have always had to run System Restore in Safe Mode but then I had restore
points to use; now I've lost those and as I said in my original post even
those restore points I created today have vanished. I've made a note of the
MS article 304449.

Ah ha!

Refer to SC Tom's post then. It sounds like you are running the
messed-up version.

In my opinion, Zone Alarm isn't even necessary; I wouldn't run it.

Yes you're right I am running version 9.1.507.000 but unfortunately I've
never had version 9.1.008.000 to roll it back to. My previous version was
only v.8......

I've Googled v 9.1.008.000 but don't recognise the sites it's available
from. Where can I get a copy please?

Thank you. I had previously looked at that site but the only download link
was for the latest version. The link for the previous version just gives
me the list of improvements.

I'm so sorry. That link used to have a download button next to each version.
Don't know why (or when) it was changed.
Try this one:
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1043_en/zaSuiteSetup_91_008_000_en.exe
That should work.

That's an old saying, possibly before your time.
You may not want it, but obviously enough other people do or they wouldn't
still be in business.
My philosophy is if you don't want it, don't use it. Otherwise, it's really
none of your concern. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean
everyone else should also dislike it. I don't like beets, but if you do,
that's fine, and if you were a guest for dinner and wanted them, I'd fix
them for you.
Have a wonderful day!

WHY ask for trouble? Don't use it and save yourself all that grief. Common
sense.
I don't want it, so don't use it for valid reasons. Are you saying I

common sense? Beets don't equate to something that causes problems on a

I'm sorry my use of ZAISS seems to have caused you such disquiet. As for
causing me grief; how? It has caused me a bit of inconvenience but has also
given me the chance to see, again, how kind some people are on this bb; so
on balance a good result.

BTW SCT you're a lot nicer than me; I wouldn't have served the beets

What YOU would do is far worse than 'is of no use to anyone'
It's destructive.

And how was it that you were trying to "show/teach them better ways and
things"? You had absolutely no suggestions for any kind of replacement for
Tony to run instead of ZA. In my first reply, I suggested MSE and Windows
Firewall as a viable alternative. Of course, you may not agree with that
combination either, but that's OK. What was your suggestion? Oh, wait, I
remember; "Why do you want that trash on your system?" Very good! That's a
lot of help!
I've seen a number of good posts and replies from you in the past, but on
this particular one, you came across like a couple of the to-remain-unnamed
idiots in the alt.windows7.general group. You may not like ZA or any of the
other 3rd party security suites for various reasons, and that's your opinion
and you're entitled to it. But I've been running Windows since 3.0 and ZA
since it first came out, and have had fewer problems with ZA than with
Windows. That doesn't mean I'm going to relegate Windows to the trash heap
any more than I would quit using other programs that I like. But if you're
going to make broad statements like "that trash," the least you could do is
offer a suggestion for an alternative or two.

I think you have totally misunderstood my posts. The OP had zone alarm and
it was causing trouble.
I was trying to steer him toward MSE and Windows firewall which I use.
The OP was more interested in getting ZA re-installed.
Please note, I have a method of teaching. I DO NOT just post answers, I
attempt to get posters to think.
Please reread the posts and point out my errors.

I never saw you list MSE or anything else as an option instead of using ZA.
All you said was ZA was trash, and continued to expound on that. In light of
your posts, I still ask how you were trying to "show/teach them better ways
and things"? Certainly not from anything I saw in your posts and replies to
this thread.
I never said you had any errors, just extreme prejudice against a product
you don't personally like. That's not an error, just your opinion, and you
are entitled to that.
