Tried using a search engine (Google, etc) to look for others with similar
issues?
I only ask because the usual solution to what you seem to have in the way of
an issue is posted several times a week (day maybe?) throughout the internet
in newsgroups like this one. Perhaps - in the future - you could use
something
like Google to speed up your solution-finding-missions. ;-)
Just a suggestion.
First thing to try:
As many will tell you - ignore the title and symptoms listed in the article
referred to. Do method 1 and 2 and see if it fixes your issue whether or
not you repaired anything.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Try method 1 and try to update*.
If fails - try method 2 and try to update*.
*try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest
avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.
Second thing to try:
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset
Third thing to try:
Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.
Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".
Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.
- Download/Install Windows Update v3.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)
- Reboot.
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.
Usually - method one from the first suggestion fixes the issue.
Sometimes they have to proceed to method two from the first suggestion.
Less seldom - but it does happen - only the tool from the second suggestion
will work - although the first suggestion is contained within the second in
many ways (as well as some of the third.)
And the third suggestion is there because before there was a suggestion (1)
and a suggestion (2) - the third was the best bet and worked in most cases.

Open a notepad and copy and paste the following into it and save as
update.bat on your desktop. Double click the bat file to excute and click
[Yes to register the dlls and reboot your machine and see if that will help!
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
Or try this fix.

Repeated (because it seldoms fails to fix the problem you are reporting):
*NOTE* - Even if you *think* you did one or all of these things before - do
them again. Precisely as laid out in their respective instruction sets. I
have seen many people *say* they did this, ended up having to charge them $$
when I just went in and did what i had told them to do for free - all
because they did not follow the directions as given. ;-)
Any error messges you get when you tried the updates?
I believe that I can answer this, because I just did what you did. I had
the same problems. But I have a Cable Modem, not dial-up, so it did not take
as long.
How I fixed it, was to limit the number of hotfixes, I manually
downloaded and I turned on Automatic Updates, also. Most of the Updates were
installed, when I shutdown the computer and turned on the computer back on,
when it shut off.

No such thing.
SP3 installs on AMD systems just fine. Particularly ones that were
installed correctly and not from an image made on an Intel based system.

You are not mis-informing just me - but mis-informing everyone. ;-)
Update the BIOS has resolved this issue for some with that motherboard.
Reguardless - it has nothing to do with you having an AMD processor -
everything to do with your choice of motherboard and the lack of support
from ASUS on this issue.
I - in fact - answered a posting TODAY about the issue you are referring to:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_frm/thread/e4fdd12499f24560/1feab80e906e0838#1feab80e906e0838
Where the author posted back with this today:
"CANCEL request for help. I installed the latest BIOS and the
installation of SP3 was perfect with no errors."
So - I repeat - no such thing (in reference to you referring to it as an
"AMD Bug")...
"ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard bug" - maybe.
"AMD Bug" - no.

Actually - you called it an AMD bug. You didn't say much else.
I pointed out there was no such thing and yet - you still try to get around
the fact that it is an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard bug (if anything)
and has nothing to do with AMD other than the fact that that specific model
of motherboard from ASUS happens to cater to AMD processors (and AFAIK - no
other model/brand has the issue the ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe has.)
It *is* an ASUS issue - it's just one they or no one else will ever likely
address because the board is obsolete.
If it was not an ASUS issue - there would be a lot more people with other
motherboards with the same issues. There are not. Just the ASUS A8N32-SLI
Deluxe motherboard.
Perhaps the person that responded that it was working was using the BETA
BIOS - 1405 (released 7 months after the version you have.) Perhaps they
just got lucky with the poor stability issues of the board and the right
combinatiojn of things plugged into the 'right' USB ports.
In any case - ASUS made a choice to not support that board any longer.
However - no one else has any responsibility to hold to for that board. The
manufacturer decides to leave it out in the cold - no one else should be
expected to take up their slack.
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A8N32-SLI%20Deluxe
Sorry your motherboard no longer works with the current version of some OSes
(likely some older versions of some OSes as well - but all components have
their limitations.)
I installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 on a computer with AMD Processor
with no problems.
However, if you have a program like Acronis True Image 10 or 11 Home,
create a partition image before you try installing Windows XP Service Pack
3.
How to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 is real easy.
Use msconfig. Dot Selective Startup. Uncheck Load Startup Items. Click
Apply. Click the Services Tab. Check Hide All Microsoft Services. Click
Disable All. Click Apply Click Ok. Only Click Restart, if you burned the IT
Version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 to a CD-R. Otherwise click Restart
Later.
Download the IT version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 to your Desktop
Briefcase.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&displaylang=en
Only reboot if you burn the download to a CD-R, especially if you don't
already have it on a CD-R.
After you have it, reboot the computer. Insert the CD-R after you are at
the Desktop. Click on the Download and it will install wih no problems.
DO NOT CLICK FINISH. Go back to msconfig and click Normal Startup. Click
Apply Click OK. Click Restart Later. Now Click Finish and reboot.

Click OK on the Access Denied Error. You have McAfee Programs installed
or another Anti-Virus Program that does the same thing. The settings are
changed, but the error message, makes one believe that nothing was changed.
It does change.
