I am still able to get online w/out the USB. Everthing is hooked up, double
checked everything the USB light is off, yet I'm still able to get online.
I'm new to these machines, I don't Understand. Somebody Please Help

What does USB (universal serial bus) light have to do with getting on
line, and why are you concerned? I would worry more about NOT getting on
line! Doesn't sound like you have a problem at all. If it is learning
about your new computer, have you considered reading the user guide that
came with it?

Sweetie, imagine we're thousands of miles away from you. Well, we are.

We can't see your computer. We don't know what brand and model number
of computer you've got.

We also cannot see any external boxes that are connected to your computer,
what the brand name and model number is printed on those boxes.

If you expect help, please provide more information about the
things in front of you. If there is a cable leading from your
computer, to some other box of equipment, then tell us about it.

If you need assistance identifying the equipment, take the invoice
that came in the box, and read off the names of the things there.
That should help you, to better describe your equipment.

I thought on the box ( usb ) they were all to be on. This is why I was
concerned. Is way I was able to get online cause I didn't understand why.
Thank you for clearing that up for me, I'm more at ease now. I do have plenty
to learn about my computer. Thanks Again! :)

Mind Readers...
Some friendly corrections to your last posting:
"you're", neglected the word [not] and "information" ("info")

It's not really a "mind reader" thing - but more of a common sense thing
with a little bit of careful planning and execution.

For example - if you were able to get online (you said this twice) - what
was your issue, exactly?

If I read between the lines - you have some sort of Cable Modem or DSL modem
that you got for high speed access to the Internet and it came with a
network cable (looks like a fat telephone cable) and a USB cable. You
hooked it up (or did someone else hook it up for you) to your computer
following some sort of directions. Those directions are usually pretty
straight-forward and overly simplified (for good reason) and should have
pointed out you could connect either with the network cable or the USB cable
and if you used the USB, there would be software installation needed on your
machine.

For some reason - the instruction were either not that clear or you missed
it - you assumed that both connections needed to be made to the box (network
and USB) and since the USB light was not coming on (see the part about
software installation) you could not figure out why everything was working
and instead of contacting those who sold/maintained the box in question (the
cable modem or DSL modem provider and/or Internet Service Provider) you
somehow found your way to this forum and posted about your confusion (there
was no problem - everything was working) here.

Is that fairly accurate so far?

Don't think of it as a computer that confuses you - think of it as something
you gvenerally understand. Think about describing a problem online like
describing it over the telephone - where no one else but you can actually
see the problem and you have to get help so you have to be very detailed.
If you called a poison control center for help, you probably wouldn't be so
vague (or if you would be - whoever you were calling for would be dead) - so
think of it that way. If you have 'some box' you are trying to describe -
find the markings on it (words and letters) and post those along with your
question. Usually there is a Make/Model associated with such devices,
labels that tell you things, etc. Describe what you see, what you have
done. Over-simplify things so that you can allow others to see what you
see.

Something like:

"I have a black box that I got from my cable tv provider so I could get on
the Internet. On the bottom on a sticker it says, "Motorola Model SB5120"
and on the back it has several connections. One is obviously for USB, one
is to hook to the cable TV connection, one is for power and one is for some
large telephone looking cable (labeled "network".) I connected the Power,
the large telephon elooking connection, the cable connections and the USB.
On the front is a bunch of lights labeled (in order from top to bottom):
"Power, Internet, USB, Computer Activity" and the Power, Internet and
Computer Activity ligts are on/blinking. The USB light will not come on and
I have read the manuals, contacted the people who gave/sold/leased me the
modem, etc. Help!"

The answer would not have changed (the final answer): Don't need both the
USB and Network connections.

However - the questions would not have been an enigma. ;-)

Yes I do I have a DSL modem box w/2 cables ( blue & yellow ) & a phone cord.
As I said before Bob had cleared things up for me; I got excited ( worry ). I
got myself all worked up for nothing witch was good. :)

If you had a problem and could *not* get on-line
then you would not have been able to post at all...

so it was indeed wise of you to report that you are having no problems.

The point of my response was not to provide you with the answer - anyone can

you ask such questions and to be more careful when doing so.

Often times people will skip over posts such as your original without any
second thought due to the lack of details, errors, etc. An extra few
minutes verifying you have told people all you can and checking for errors
in the post itself can make all the difference in the answers you receive
(or don't receive.)
