Dave,

Start Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Double-click the "Microsoft Works Update Detect" value.

Enclose the data within double-quotes:

So that the following string

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe

becomes:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe"

Close Regedit.exe

Carried out the regedit instructions.
Closed system then restarted. Everything now as normal.

No display of Microsoft folder.

Many thanks for your help in cracking this problem. I did not associate
Microsoft Works update with a display of the folder containing Synctoy.
All the best

Dave

Hi,
Just to keep you updated. I have found that when I use Microsoft Word the
problem is reinstated. I do not use any other program within the Works suite.
I now re-instate the register from a copy, to reset it back to normal, to
stop the problem. This has only started after I installed Synctoy from
Microsoft, but they do not support it!!. As it is involving one of their
products and is obviously affecting quite a few people, do you think a patch
may be forthcoming ?
Regards
Dave

Interesting issue! I'm installing Synctoy in my test system in order to
repro the problem here. Will post back if I find anything interesting.

BTW, do you know which software is remove the quotes around the startup
entry? For XP Professional, you may use registry auditing to track the
culprit.

How to use Group Policy to configure auditing of Windows registry keys in XP
Professional?:
