Internet Explorer7 Freezes

When I try to open a web page it will occasionally open withoput any problem
but often it just takes ages with the little circle in the toolbar indicating
it is waiting for the website to respond/and at the bottom it might say 1
item remaining. Sometimes it will take 5 or 6 minutes to open sometimes I
just give up, or retry and get straight in. Certain pages are more
troublesome than others but I get trouble with most sites at one time or
another. It is pretty chronic now.

I've had this issue for several months now. I don't remember downloading
anything prior to the problem-too long ago I'm afraid. sometimes it's worse
than others but most of the time quite bad.

I've got a Dell Dimension desktop XP2 home edition. I have tried disabling
all add ons but it made no difference. Do regular spyware checks and virus
scans. Nothing unusual showing up. It has got a real pain and i'm just
wondering if there is away to rectify without re-installing windows-my next
stop. really appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

P.S. May have trouble getting back quickly,as this site gives me lots of
grief opening up pages!

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

A problem area could over many Add Ons. In Internet Explorer select
Tools, Manage Add-Ons, Enable or Disable Add-Ons. Disable the lot and
observe for effect. You can add them back one by one to see whether
there is a particular one responsible for the "freeze".

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With

Check the hard drive for bad sectors by running chkdsk /f /r

You need to be aware that running chkdsk can take hours

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Hi Gerry. Crazy computer. Today it seems to opening most pages OK but for the
first time i could not get my Home page 'Google Search' open. I tried a few
times but it didn't want to know-left it for about 5 or 6 minutes each time.
The peak was on 687 400 all the time. I did see that the CPU usage just sat
between 0-4% whilst trying to open Google-but went up to 50-60% when opening
up any other pages.

I ran the command as you said. chkdsk/f/r it checked files indexes and
volume(i think?) and then just closed at the finish-so I presume that means
Disk is OK.

Sorry PA Bear. I didn't realise there was an IE section.
I have been using Zone Lab Free version Firewall for as long as I can
remember.
AVG free version Anti Virus for well over a year. I do believe they were
both running when I upgraded to IE7 and have been since. Thanks.

either. Given that all persons raising problems here get an answer ( not
something that can always be said for the

You did not answer these questions. You should be able to gather more

The Disk Defragmenter Report tells me that, although you have plenty of
free disk space, you have a lot of large multi-fragmented files. Those
listed are a number of system restore points and temporary files in the
"Transcoded Files Cache". However, those listed in the Disk
Defragmenter report is only part of the story. There are a lot more
smaller fragmented files not listed.

The "Transcoded Files Cache" is a phenomena I have not encountered
before. Googling reveals posts where the problem was that the files in
the cache were occupying considerable disk space where more free disk
space was needed. However, you have more than adequate free disk space
but I suspect they are a cause of the multi-fragmentation of files.
Removing them and following up with regular maintenance should improve
system performance.

Have you tried using cCleaner to clean up your disk?

An alternative to Disk CleanUp is cCleaner (freeware) which does a more
thorough job than Disk CleanUp. Disk CleanUp has to be run for each user
profile, whereas cCleaner only needs to be run once. There is an option
on the Applications page whereby you can check a box for Media Player. I
think this may remove the contents of the "Transcoded Files Cache" but
you should check that it does.

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you
should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also
offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form
History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one has
irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's
recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer so
that they can easily be re-entered.

Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.

cCleaner does not remove restore points. You need to use Disk CleanUp
for this. Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest
System Restore point.

These measures will improve system performance. The question is will it
be enough to remove the "freezes"? I have some more questions.

What is your CPU processor speed?

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

I do have CCleaner and use it occasionally.

My speed is 2.8 Mhz. i have AVG anti virus and Adaware and AVG anti spyware.
Had spybot until a couple of weeks ago and got rid because it wouldn't update.

I can't any thing with out Internet Explorer7 Freezing up. my windows live
hotmail wont work, my Microsoft Office Outlook will only down load one E mail
a day, and I have to go to G Mail.com to get my mail, if Internet Explorer7
will let me open my gmail account before it freezes up, and I don't get any
thing, and this has been going on for months.
