Please help.... after downloading the latest service
pack, I am getting the following error message:
Windows - file corrupt
C:\\$mft is unreadable or corrupt. Please run chk
disk utility
Upon running check disk utility, there are no errors
found but, in a short amount of time, the error message
reappears. Can anyone help out with this?

Hi!
you just need to boot the WinXP install CDROM to the
Recovery Console and run the filesystem checks and repairs.

Rebooting from the CD and doing the repair did not work!
It fixed the an error, but it didn't stick. The error
message came back again.

Oops...accidentally hit send too fast a moment ago.
Anyway, I understand that Microsoft has a solution for it
as mentioned in kb support id 275704. I just don't know
how to go about obtaining the fix and I was hoping someone
in the newsgroup could help me. I am getting desparate.
Thank you.

I had an identical situation hit me about 10 days ago. Although the
Knowledge Base article Q275704 deals with Win2000, it fits the situation I
had. The main partition was NTFS with a small Fat32 partition at the end.

Doing a Repair reinstall didn't fix it. Even deleting the partition and
re-installing the OS didn't fix it permanently. It worked fine for about a
day, and then started giving me the same errors. I couldn't even boot and
it got stuck in a loop. I gave up and re-installed everything on another
hard drive (with just one partition) and it's been working super every
since.

I've since done some research and found that one possible solution might
have been to boot up with the CD, then go to the Recovery Console (the
first Repair option you come to). From there try:

FIXMBR C:
FIXBOOT C:
COPY CDDrive:\I386\NTLDR C:\
COPY CDDrive:\I386|NTDETECT.COM C:\
BOOTCFG /rebuild

Finally reboot and hopefully that will fix the problem.
