Hi, i turned my computer on running XP pro, and the following msg shows

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

How can i repair this file instead of formatting my hdd and reinstalling xp

thank you

First thing to try:

Use your XP cd and boot to the recovery console

then issue the command chkdsk /r
