My laptop came pre-installed with Vista in partition C: I installed XP in
partition D: hoping it would automatically give me the option to select
Vista or XP (as in good old days). However, the system logs directly to XP
only. Is there any thing I could do from XP window for me to have the option
to boot to XP or VIsta during boot up?

By the way... my laptop came with Vista pre-installed and the operating
system is bunched up on a "recovery disk." So I do not have the Vista on a
separate disk.

Thanks in advance for yout help.

The simplest solution to this issue is to download, install in XP, and run this
program.

VistaBootPRO 3.3
http://www.vistabootpro.org/

Run the program from within XP and click on the System Bootloader tab.
Under Choose a System Bootloader to install, select Windows Vista Bootloader.
Under System Bootloader Options, select All drives.
Hit the Install Bootloader button.

Close VistaBootPRO and restart your computer. You should now have access to both
installations.

Take a look at this article for more info.

You installed in the wrong order. The correct order is to install the older
operating system first and then the newer. That's why you do not have the
option to pick XP or Vista. XP knows nothing about Vista. If XP had been
first Vista would have known about XP and set up the boot options. You can
correct this.

Follow this guide to correct your boot issues.

Will this conflict in Restore Points occur between Vista and earlier
Windows versions occur even if the OSes are on separate hard
drives?

Yes. XP will purge Vista VSS files on any volume XP can see when it boots
up. The purpose of the registry entry is to keep XP from seeing a Vista
volume (by putting the volumes offline while XP is running).

Read the end of the attachment for an explanation.

It is not just about restore points. Restore points are familiar to
everyone but there are many types of files that are lost. Essentially, all
your Vista recovery options. No one with valuable files should allow this.
The fix is easy to do, permanent, and does not require any fiddling with
hardware or special boot managers. Just do it. You will be glad you did.
