Go to Tools > Folder Options > View (tab) > make sure that "Do not cache
thumbnails" is not checked. Make sure that "Remember each folder's view
settings" is checked"

Thanks for your fast response, Richard. I checked the settings and there was
already a "dot" next to "Show common tasks in folders". In addition, I can
switch to Filmstrip view but when I do, I just see a line of generic icons
going across only the top row and the icons are just the generic ones and not
the minipreviews I used to see. Any other advice is more than welcome.

Thanks,
Marc

Thanks for responding so quickly, Andre. I followed your suggestions and
found that "Do not cache thumbnails was already not checked and that
"Remember each folder's view settings" was already checked. However, I still
see only generic picture items instead of the miniphotos I used to see.
Filmstrip view also doesn't look right since all the generic icons are lined
up on only the top row and so there is no way to view the pictures without
individually opening up each picture file.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Marc

Hi all, I had exactly the same problem on my desktop as Marc. I tried
Ramesh's suggestion and got " not able to locate " message back. I ran a
search and found where shimgvw.dll was located and included that path as part
of the command. In my case "regsvr32
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\shimgvw.dll" . IT WORKED!!
It may be that the file was deleted at the location suppose to be, and
that's why had had to include the path. Anyway, thanks Ramesh!

You're welcome. A copy of the file shimgvw.dll is supposed to be in the System32 folder. Pls try copying and re-registering the file.

I tried re-registering the shimgvw.dll file but I got a message back that
said "LoadLibrary("shimgvw.dll") failed - The specified module could not be
found."
I searched the hard drive for shimgvw.dll and found it in the following
locations: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and C:\WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES\I386. Both
files are 428 KB, dated 8/4/2004, and show version 6.0.2900.2180. Do you
think I should try replacing them?

Also, when I right-click on the desktop and click properties, I get the
following dll error message "rundll32.exe - Unable to Locate Component - This
application failed to start because gdiplus.dll was not found. Re-installing
the application may fix this problem." Any ideas on how to fix this problem
would also be greatly appreciated.

Marc,

Have you tried running SFC /Scannow?
