I have a typical problem while logging off from Windows XP. Each time, I
logoff there is a popup window with the header "ShellIconHiddenWindow" and
automatically disappears after a few seconds. Why is this? And how do I
prevent it from appearing again?

I have been having a similar problem since last week - at least that was
when I first noticed the problem. Only change I had made to my machine
around the time I first noticed the problem was to install musicmatch
jukebox 10 and the latest version of winamp. I beklieve i also installed
fineprint as well. Do not know if the problem relates to the installation of
any of these applications. Did you install any of these before you started
noticing the problem. If its one of these applications I mentioned then that
could be the culprit. Please let m,e know.

You are absolutely right. I have installed Musicmatch Jukebox 10 after which
I have started noticing this problem. What did you do to handle this
situation?

Thanks

I have not done anything as yet. I was in fact ignoring the problem until I
had a chance to uninstall some these applications I installed and hopefully
by a process of elimination find the problem. That you had also installed
musicmatch 10 would seem to suggest that this is the source of the problem.
If it turns out that it is I hope a patch will be available soon from
musicmatch as I do not want to uninstall it. It would be good to know if
anyone else has had this problem after installing mmjb 10 to see if this
problem is widespread.

Here is the R & D that I have done thus far. Hope this might help you and
the other views of this forum. Opening the MSCONFIG, I unchecked the
Musicmatch start up files that are loaded at the start up of windows. After
I have done this, the problem is resolved. I do not see the message any
longer.

Best of luck.

What is the purpose of these musicmatch startup files? Are they needed for
the application to function properly?

There is no function except to torture you and clog up your startup.
MusicMatch will work fine without this. This action is one of my pet
peeves against software developers - their program might be the most
important thing in the world to them, but it shouldn't start
automatically with Windows unless *I* tell it to. peeve, peeve. ;-)

Found the same exact symptoms after loading Music match 10.

Uncheck the 2 music match files in the startup folder in MSCONFIG and
it cleared up the problem.

Can you, or somebody, list the files that should be unchecked in
msconfig? I have looked and don't see anything that looks like
musicmatch. I also have MM 10, and I get that darned shelliconhidden
window almost everytime I turn off my computer.

"mimboot.exe" seems to be the offending startup program: I started
having this "shelliconhiddenwindow" problem after installing MMJB 10
too. I contacted MusicMatch tech support and they had me uninstall and
reinstall MMJB 10. That did not help, but in the process of doing
this, I happened to check the Windows task manager and found a process
running named "mim.exe" that was using 50% of my CPU time! This was on
a Dell 8300, 3GHz machine. This led me to finding the only MM startup
file I could find on my system called "mimboot.exe." I turned this off
in msconfig and the problem went away after restarting, but ONLY AS
LONG AS I DON'T RUN THE MMJB 10 PLAYER!! When I run the player,
mim.exe starts again and won't shut down unless I turn it off in Task
Manager or reboot the computer. I gave all this information to MM tech
support, but haven't heard anything back yet.

Yes, thanks for this thread. I also installed MM 10 with the same
problem. I will follow the instructions here feeling quite certain
that it will partially solve the problem. It's not surprising that
MusicMatch has not solved this, the customer service seems to need some
work. Instead of reading the emails they seem to like cutting and
pasting quick general replies like "re-install." It seems a like an
outsourcing job that misfired. Overall, though, I am satisfied with
the service though. Thanks again!

I to have the "Shell Icon Hidden Window" syndrome. I also have
MMJB 10 and all updates/patches. I have also used msconfig to
disable anything I thought was associated with MMJB. The problem
still exists; i.e., when closing computer, the shut-down process
is interrupted momentarily by a pop up window "Shell Icon Hidden
Window" and indicating that this program must close. Apparently
this ghostly program then ends and the computer continues with
shut down successfully. So far I have received no help from Microsoft.
I have asked many computer experts and searched numerous
newsgroups, all unsuccessfully.
Does anyone out there have asolution for this
annoying popup? Thanks

Hay I have spent an entire day in this, and so far I thought the error
is being caused by Musicmatch but after I read your comments I am now
more confused in the thought that, its something else.

Question : Is it musicmatch which causes the problem or some other
program?

Hay I have also done some research on this and I have been breaking my
head for almost a day, and seems like I have solved the problem just by
removing mimboot.exe but after reading your comments, I am now

causing this pop up.
Is it Musicmatch which is causiing this error pop up?

Hi, I am also running Service Pack 2 and installed MMJ10 on my PC. I am
getting this same issue, popup upon shutting down PC, HiddenShellIconWindow.
This is frustrating as I can see others are having the same problem. I will
try removing the startup files suggested but has anyone heard for sure if
this is Microsoft bug or Music Match bug. I think it's Music Match because
previously had MMJ9 installed on pc and the program always hung upon shutting
down mmj9.exe is shutting down. When I upgraded to vs 10 it seemed to solve
the problem until recently started noticing this new one. Let me know what
you think!

Well since all those who have had this problem lately have installed
MMJB10, I wonder if that's what's called a clue?

Hi Kelly, I am awaiting word back from MusicMatch about the issue.
Hopefully, they can provide an answer to this issue and fix it with an
upcoming version. In a way, I don't really think anyone should blame
Musicmatch since Microsoft can't even build a sound OS that isn't patched to
death.

There's been many reports recently of users being stuck with an error
closing 'shelliconhiddenwindow' when trying to shutdown / restart their
computer. Through trial and error some have correctly identified an
update to MusicMatch Jukebox as the culprit. MusicMatch have released a
further update that successfully resolves this issue and it may be
applied by following the MusicMatch Technical Support email quoted
below.
NOTE:- Jukebox 'Plus' users get free priority technical support.

Quote:

.... We released a newer build of the Musicmatch Jukebox that has
seemed to resolve the issue with the white pixel and the shell icon
crash...

- Click the "Change/Remove" button.
- Select "Yes" if you are asked to verify that you want to remove any
shared files.
- Reboot your PC.

Once your system has restarted, please continue with the following:

"C:\Program
Files\Musicmatch\")
- Rename this folder to "Musicmatch OLD"
- Reinstall Musicmatch Jukebox by running the setup file downloaded
from the following URL:

http://dnld.musicmatch.com/builds/MMD/PC/DNL/999990000/

- Reboot your PC once again.

If the problem is resolved with this new version and you wish to
restore your library and playlists, you can do the following:

- Close Musicmatch Jukebox.
- Drag the Library and Playlist folders from the "Musicmatch
OLD\Musicmatch Jukebox" directory to the newly installed C:\Program
Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\ directory.
- Reopen Musicmatch Jukebox.

If you have purchased Musicmatch Jukebox Plus, please be sure to
re-enter your key once you've reinstalled the software to enable the
Plus features.
To enter your key, please do the following:

I am running Windows XP with SP 2 and have Musicmatch Jukebox 10
installed. I have 2 users defined, myself and my wife. I installed
Musicmatch under my user profile.

I had the same problem, end program ShellIconHiddenWindow at log off
time, but funny enough, this message only appeared when my wife turned
the computer off, not when I closed Windows.

Looking around I found interesting information here:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/computer/topic/36784-1.html

It seems that Musicmatch admit they are causing the problem. They
suggest to uninstall and reinstall the program.

Here is how I fixed the problem. I found information on other forums,
saying that mimboot.exe is the culprit. This program comes with
Musicmatch. I found that mimboot.exe was one of the startup programs. I
removed it using Startup Control Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin (www.mlin.net)
and this fixed the problem.

PS -
In fact I had 2 problems when turning the computer off, both when using
my wife's identity. No problems at all with my log on. The first was
this "ShellIconHiddenWindow", which is now gone and the second shows a
window that says "TRSDKd ww: C:\Program Files\Hewl" and that's all I
can see, because the window is not resizable.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Yes, I do have a Hewlet Packard Laserjet printer installed, and with
trial and error, plus some info from other forums, I think I have
traced my problem to "javaw.exe" sitting in one of the subfolders in
Program Files / Hewlet Packard, . . .

If I rename this program to something else like "javaw.exe.suspect"
then the error message when the computer is turned off, goes away.
Problem with this "solution" is that Yahoo Messenger and MSG Messanger
fail to complete the automatic start when the computer is switched on.
So, now, I can choose between an incomplete automatic start or an error
message at switch off.

A search for "javaw.exe" tells me that I have 2 versions of this
program, plus 2 other instances of files that contain this chain of
characters, in the Windows / Prefetch folder.

Do I need this javaw.exe at all?

I also have this same problem with the Hidden Window Stuff and noticed
it after updating to Music Match 10. But now my music match will not
start on my laptop. It comes up with the log and the start up sound
but that goes away and never comes back. I have deleted and reloaded
many times with no luck. Now I can't even reload an older music match
8.1 and get it to run. I have virus checked, adware, spyboted and
registry magiced the computer 3 times.... Anyone with any Ideas?
