Hello,

I have 2 USB ports in the front of my tower and, from what I can tell, 4 in
the back. Windows device manager is telling me that the enhanced one's
location is "PCI bus 0, device 29, function 7." Where, precisely, might that
be? If you interested, I want to plug an audio interface into the computer
for which it's recommended to use the enhanced port. The 2 USB ports in the
front are in the recess by a 1/8" jack for, I assume, headphones. The
highest 2 of the back 4 are under a row of 1/8" (green) jacks for mics,
headphones and stuff. The lower 2 are just beneath them, next to a network
cable port. Thanks for your consideration.

John

Plug in the device. If it does not complain about it - it's USB 2.0.

USB mapping is a little misunderstood. USB connections are routed.
Your system has a single Enhanced controller and 3 standard controllers
for USB1(.1). When you plug in a device XP reads it's VID string and
knows which speed technology it supports. All sockets can route to the
Enhanced controller. If it's USB1(.1), then it routes to One of the three
Standard controllers. For USB 2.0 it doesn't matter which socket you
use. If the device is USB1(.1) then the location (Socket) you use will go
to one of the three standard controllers. (Clear as Mud, isn't it). This is
why if you plug a USB peripheral in a different socket, XP will redetect
or enumerate it again (because it routes to a different Standard controller)

Thank you. Very clear now. Thanks.
