What folder? Are all files in the directory (folder) usable and functional?

Select Tools > Folder Options > [View] > (o) show hidden
files and folders, and [ ] uncheck Hide Protected
Operating system files.
Open the folder and delete desktop.ini and folder.htt.
Go back to Folder options and restore to your previous
settings in the [View] tab.

Does this by any chance contain a lot of multimedia (and especially
.AVI) files? If so it will be because explorer is going through each
file to look for the component parts (AVI is an envelope that may have
several sections) to get out data like codec used, author, etc. You can
turn that search off (but will no longer see info on these properties)
by using regedit to go to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi
and deleting the PersistentHandler sub-key
