XP TEMPORARY USER PROFILE ONLY AVAILABLE

Every time I log onto newly installed XP (Home)on a newly
constructed computer, I get the XP login screen: "Windows
cannot create a local profile& is logging you in on a
temporary profile. (Etc)"

This temporary profile is useless because it doensn't
save settings.

How to fix this problem??

I think it's a hardware problem. The fundamental hardware
is: Asus K8V SE Deluxe mboard; AMD Athlon 64 processor;
Asus V9520 (NVIDIA) graphics card. BIOS is latest, VIA
chipset drivers latest, graphics driver latest. No other
cards on mbd.

Wot's going on? Anyone any clues?

Suggestions:

Right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Locate the
entries for your hard disks and double click each entry. On the Policies
tab, uncheck Enable write caching.

You will see a performance decrease because of this, but if the corrupt
registry/user profiles problems cease, then you'll be certain of the cause.

Logon to another account with admin privilege and run System Restore.
Choose the most recent restore point and SR should restore the user
hives.

Or...

Boot into safe mode and log in as Administrator. Copy ntuser.dat from
%windir%\repair to "Documents and Settings\[your user id]". Now do a system
restore to a point in time prior to when the corruption message began to
appear.

Or...

Relocate NTUserdat

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and find the profile you want to change and
then change ProfileImagePath to the ntuser.dat folder that you want to use.
You must manually copy or move the ntuser.dat file there.

I have not had any success with you suggested options to my problem. I know
next to nothing about this business, but I suspect that the problem with your
"fix it" options is that there is in fact no login user profile file to
fiddle with. I don't think the file is corrupt - I think the file does not
exist; it never did exist - it was never created. Right from the first XP
startup, the program warned that I was logged in on a temporary profile. So I
think there is no file to fiddle with.

When I create a new account (admin priviliges), & log in as a user of this
account (without shutting the system down), this account disappears
completely when I shut down & boot afresh - the computer again logs me in on
a temporary profile & all previous setting are wiped off.

So it strikes me that any alterations have to be done outside the XP program
- because I can operate the program only under the (essentially) useless
temporary user profile. It also appears impossible to me to alter a program
setting without having the program running. Comes acrossd as a Catch-22 to me.

Any ideas?
