Norton AV 2006 system tray icon

icon always appears in the system tray. The method below supposedly
removes it. Have you used this method with any problems:
(2) Sometimes there is a red x over this icon. What is the reason for
it, if there is a consistent reason?
(3) When I upgraded, NAV warned me that Automatic Updates is not on. I
also got a system tray icon that said "Downloading Updates" while
running a NAV scan. I went to Control Panel and turned off Automatic
Updates. As I remember, I never had it on in the first place.
I have to say Symantec is pretty silly if you can't turn off their
system tray icon.

No, I just go into Options and turn it off or on as I want it.
No need to run around the barn when it's right there in front of
you.

The red X means Auto Protection isn't turned on. It goes away
when it's turned on.

Auto updates for what? Norton? MS? Etc.? You may be
mixing up which is which.

mentioned already. It's -YOU- that can't seem to read.
Say what you wish; or use the Options setting to turn it off.
Oh, and learn to use Help that's available - it's also pretty
clearly spelled out there.
It sounds to me like you got something that's too far advanced
for yo and you need fewer features - sell it on EBAY for $1 and
switch to something else with less power and fewer features.

There is no option for it.

You either can't understand me or we're talking about different
software packages.
I'm sure there is no option to turn off that system tray icon.

Norton AntiVirus and then click on Status).
When I click on Norton Protection Center and then click on Security
Basics, the only thing that says "Off" is "Windows Automatic Updates."
I believe that is why the system tray icon has a red x.

1. Turn on Windows Automatic Updates, the only reason to have it off is if
you have a pirated copy of Windows and we won't go there. Or
2. Turn off Show Windows Updates Alerts under Norton Protection Center

One of the processes running is navapsvc.exe. Doesn't that mean
Auto-Protect is running, regardless of the red x?
I thought Windows Auto Updates might load patches and other things when
I don't want it to and/or might be some kind of problem.

I wrote the posting that Richard referenced in his link. It wasn't my idea,
I found it by searching for a way to eliminate the big ugly icon that
Symantec placed on my Task Bar. I couldn't see any purpose to it...other than
touting Symantec's programs and annoying me. And I couldn't find any way to
disable it from within NAV 2006.
At any rate, I disabled it per the instructions I gave in my posting. That
was in March of this year. Everything in NAV 2006 seems to work properly. I
do not see any problems. And I still don't see any need for the function.

This may relate to a confusion of mine, too. In my system tray, there
is a small yellow shield with what looks like an exclamation point on
it (but could be something else). Every so often, it pops up a
message saying "Updates are ready for your computer; click here to
install." I never click it because I don't know where it comes from.
It doesn't say Norton, MS or anything else. My questions are:
1. What "updates" does the yellow shield mean?
2. I just unclicked Norton icon in system tray, but it's still there
(the big one with the word Norton on it is the one I'd like to remove
from view).
3. In general, how does one remove icons from the system tray, and if
an icon is removed, it doesn't affect the program itself, does it?

1) The "small yellow shield" sounds like the "Windows Automatic Update"
notification. It is not related to NAV. It's a notification from Microsoft
telling you that there's an update for Windows. Your Windows XP program is
probably set to
"Download updates, but let me choose when to install them".
The Automatic Updates can be set to automatically download and install
updates, download and let you choose when to install updates, notify you but
don't download updates and turn off the automatic update feature. To view or
change the settings of Windows Automatic Update go to Start/Settings/Control
Panel/Automatic Updates.
It would be very prudent of you to install all Microsoft Windows XP updates.
Some are improvements to Windows. Others are intended to make your computer
less vulnerable to viruses and other security attacks. You can also check for
Microsoft updates any time at
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
2) If you're speaking of the Norton icon that's on the Taskbar, just outside
of the "tray" at the far right, that's the Norton Security Center that this
posting and removal information pertains to. I find it to be an annoyance and
a waste of time. That's why I removed it.
3) There are about as many ways to remove icons from the tray as there are
icons in it. That's because programmers don't put the icon's there in one
standardized way. And some of them don't want you to remove them.
Generally, but not always, there's an option in the program's set up that
allows you to show the icon or hide the icon. Sometimes, you can just right
click the icon and there's a show/hide feature. Sometimes it's more
difficult. You might have to go into msconfig. or services to disable it.
That's the case with the Norton Security Center taskbar icon.
You can also reduce the number of icons in the tray by right clicking a
blank area on the Taskbar, selecting Properties and checking "Hide Inactive
Icons" at the bottom of the "Taskbar" screen
And please be aware that some programs require the icon to be in the tray
for them to work properly.

i believe the yellow shield is for windows xp security updates so you should
probably install them. you can turn off automatic updates in control panel
if you prefer.
as for the tray icons, i think you will find an option to turn them off in
norton's options menus.
