I have found a bug in Spyware Doctor. Once the program is installed,
it locks the drive so that Partition Magic and Chkdsk cannot do
offline work.

The error from PM is "error 27 Cannot lock drive"
The error from chkdsk is "unable to gain exclusive use of drive"

Uninstalling spyware doctor fixed the problem.

That may not be a bug but design. Things aren't bugs because you don't like
the way things are designed to work.

Don,

I am not going to edit these. But, you may find them of interest.

Wes,

Thanks so much. I uninstalled the Spyware Doctor and
instantly on reboot my C:/ scanned just perfectly. So it
was the software. I also got a reply from PCTools and
they are aware of the problem and are working on it.
Here is their advice to me:

"We are aware of the problem with chkdsk, defrag and
error-checking not working with Spyware Doctor installed.
Our development team is currently working on this issue.

"In the meantime, you could perform the following steps
which will allow chkdsk, defrag and error-checking to run
on startup.

"1. Exit from Spyware Doctor (to exit from Spyware
Doctor please right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in
the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows
taskbar) and select Exit from the menu that appears)

"2. Delete the file
'ikhlayer.sys' from c:\windows\system32\drivers\

"3. Restart Spyware Doctor

"Chkdsk, defrag and error-checking should now work."

Since I uninstalled it I can't try it. I have the CD and the
URL to reinstall it if you would like to know what it will
do to delete the file they suggest. Now that I know what's
causing the trouble if it does not work I can still uninstall
it again if it does not work. Thanks again Wes.

Wes; I'm impatient I guess, I reinstalled and tried to check
the disk for errors again after deleting 'iklayer.sys'. It works
just fine doing that. I had to stop the scan as I didn't need
it, but to let you know that everything is copacetic. Either
deleting that file or uninstalling will correct the problem
until they can get the problem ironed out.

What a relief... someone should go on that site and let
Don know that he can still use the Spyware Doctor
as it really is a good tool.

Thanks so much for your help maybe some one else will
benefit from these entries.

You really should try that on the command line. You will be shocked.

1. You need a space before the "/?".
2. Defrag does not apply to this.
3. Please quote the message to which you are responding.

Actually you don't. It works either way.

You're absolutely right, but the degree of relevance in this reply is no
different here than it is in the vast majority of his other replies--zero,
as usual.

Of course. If he were anything but a troll, he would be a good newsgroup
citizen and go along with the countless such requests that you, I, and
others have made about this.

I wonder how old he is. About 13 is my guess.

You're right. I was thinking of Recovery Console commands where I'm
pretty sure the space is required.
