Is There a Solution to This?

I keep posting this but get no response. If there is no known Microsoft
solution to my problem please let me know. I really need to get this piece
of software running...it will make contorlling my diabetes easier.

I'm trying to install software that allows me to download the info in my
blood glucose monitor to my computer, but I keep getting this error message:

“The InstallShield engine (ikernel.exe) could not be launched. Library not
registered.”

I've tried the supposed fix in the article at this link:

I sucessfuly expanded the files stdole.tlb and stdole32.tlb from the
WindowsXP CD, but I'm having a problem with stdole2.tlb. When I try to
expand that file into the Windows\System32 folder I get the message: "Can't
open input file: d:\i386\stdole2.tl_".

The file stdole2.tl exists on the WindowsXP CD but, thinking that version
might be corrupt, I downloaded the file stdole2.tlb from the internet and
copied it into my Windows\System32 folder. Then I tried the installation
again and got the same error: “The InstallShield engine (ikernel.exe) could
not be launched. Library not registered.” Does anyone have a solution to
this error?

first time I have seen it.

what is the name of the software?

have you tried a repair install of XP?

what is your malware and virus protection like?

Thanks for the input. I have called the tech support department for the
company that makes this software, and I also got this exact same message
trying to install a label making program and called that company's tech
support as well. Neither company could find a solution.

To answer Geoffw's question, I have not tried a repair install of XP...I
have no idea how or where to start? Would that require losing everything on
my hard drive?

repair install links are regularly posted in here (sorry I
do not have it off the top of my head)

if done correctly there will be no impact on your current
files and programmes. But as in any work like this it is
always recommended to have an image of backup of everything
you do not wantr to lose.

basically boot from your xp CD and follow the relevant
prompts to do the repair, if you do anything lie format,
delete partitions or the like you will destroy all data on
the drive. Do a bit of research before starting

I would be careful in doing a repair if you are unsure. MAKE sure you do
not format your harddrive.... This isn't the best place for your question
though.... but I'll add my 2 cents.

If you are having issues you may need to do this in safe mode.

Also make sure you have the latest service pack and close all other
programs.

While I don't have a quick fix answer.... i think this may be a
installshield issue....

Unfortunately I've tried the link you provided and that solution didn't work
(not even in safe mode).

Also, I have Service Pack 2 (is that the latest?), and ever since installing
it a couple months ago, I've had problems, including these two programs not
installing. Another problem I've had (not sure its related) is that Roxio
Easy CD Creator no longer opens. It always worked before, but sometime after
SP2 I get a message saying "Easy CD Creator Engine initialization has failed:
(Could not Initialize the Engine)" when trying to open it. I'm not worried
about the Roxio program, I've since found another CD buring program...but I
just wonder why these problems came about after SP2.

why don't you try uninstalling the service pack and seeing
if that was the problem?
or look at any auto updates that happened prior to the
problem starting and removing and then re installing one at
a time to see if it can be replicated.

I tried all the fixes at those links and none helped. Even re-installing
ikernel didn't work. I can't install ikernel because of ikernel...how ironic
is that.

As for the suggestion of re-installing Service Pack 2, that installation was
the worst computer experience ever!!! I attempted AT LEAST 15 to 20
installations of SP2 which took about 30 hours of installing/uninstalling,
emails, and posting messages to this board. I rather buy another computer (a
Mac next time) than risk going through that again.

I am a developer that builds install packages with InstallShield. That
error is consistent with a dll that is not present or registered. A
dll (library) must be registered with the operating system so it knows
where to find it. It can be installed anywhere and if it's
registered, windows will get it. Since the iKernel.exe file is
dependent on files that are usually already installed on the system, I
have to assume either that some files were deleted (spyware or virus?)
or you may not have install rights. If you are not a user with
install rights then this error may appear. If you have any more info,
please post. Any errors in the event log, if you have them. HTH.

This worked on my XP machine just now:

Run iKernel.exe manually. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common
Files\InstallShield\Engine\6\Intel 32.
1. Go to that directory from CMD window and run IKernal.exe.
2. Start setup.exe of the software you are trying to install.

That should do it.

Have you tried registering the library??? Try the following command in
the ....\system32 folder:

Regsvr32 stdole2.tlb
