First try the uninstall routine in Add/Remove. If no joy, then try the
Symantec total removal tool(s):

Reset the newsgroup and try again. Right click on newsgroup name,
select Properties, Local File, Reset.
The way you synchronise ( download messages ) needs to suit you.
However, when you set up a new newsgroup check the box in Tools,
Options, Read, Get xxx headers at a time (you can change the default to
any number between 50 and 999). Set the synchronisation to New not All.
Then select Tools, Get next xxx headers, after downloading has completed
select Tools, Mark for Offline and then select Synchronise, Newsgroup
and only those Marked. Remove the check mark in Tools, Options, Read,
Get xxx headers at a time. For all future downloads use Synchronise,
preferably Synchronise All. Using the procedure described for a large
newsgroup avoids downloading thousands of messages you may never read.
Another option if you read Online is to make your Synchronisation option
Headers only. You then select and download bodies for only those
messages you intend to read. Yet another alternative if you read
Offline, is to use Headers only and then to Mark selected Headers whilst
Offline and then Synchronise for marked messages reading the selected
messages later Offline.
You could be getting a poor delivery service from your ISP and this can be
avoided by taking newsgroup messages directly from the Microsoft news
server.

That's a sarcasm right?
Clearly suggested by someone who has never tried to
get a response from symantec that makes any sense.
I have been down that path -- responses like "you must
provide the details of your purchase" (when the original
email still had all the purchase info included - they just
didn't bother to read). Norton used to be good. I
no longer will purchase ANY of their stuff.

Oh, I have indeed tried to get a response from Symantec. That's one reason
I no longer use Norton AV on my home PC.
Tom
I believe I have it set up with option two, "Headers only".

Since you are using the supplied "Outlook Express" (dba
Outhouse express), that application has numerous glitches,
and it is not surprising to find you having problems with
the integration of NAV/AntiSpam into it. Just disable
integration.
Better yet Try the Mozilla Thunderbird mail application
which has more robust features for news and mail handling.
Also has anti-spam rules section and can use Norton as well
as almost any other AV ware out there.
Am using Tbird wit NAV/NAS and love it.
symantec makes a remover tool (several of them - get the right one), but
they are DESIGNED to not delete everything - they leave a trace so you
can't remove and reinstall to get a new year of subscription service for
free.
basically, run add/remove and remove it; this'll get rid of the basic
parts, leaving behind some remnants; reboot. then scan the drive by hand
and delete all folders w/ symantec in the name; many are hidden, so turn
on view of hidden and system files to find them.
then use regedit to scan the reg for entries w/ symantec or noton and
delete them (carefully -- you do know what you're doing, right?!). you'll
find some that are not important (mru and installer entries, mainly). but
com objects, parameter stores, etc., should be deleted.
With regard to Norton you're swimming against the tide.
Please learn to snip.

Look for the special removal tools.
