Is there a way to download Windows Updates to one computer to be copied to
another computer & installed there ? My laptop has a fast wireless
connection to get the updates. My desktop only has a slow dial-up. For
personal reasons, I don't want to change the desktop to wireless. So if I
can only download the updates recommended by Microsoft for my desktop on my
laptop - it will go MUCH faster. My phone company charges my dial-up access
by the minute. The updates would take an hour or more with dial-up. The
same updates with wireless would take seconds. Thanks for any detailed
help.

Simply click the link for the update(s) that you need, and follow the
on-screen instructions to save the files. Then burn them to a CD, or
use a thumb drive to transfer them to the desktop, and run each executable.
Each month Microsoft releases that month's updates in ISO format:
January 2006-current

If you are more trusting:
AutoPatcher
http://www.autopatcher.com/
Windows Updates Downloader
http://wud.jcarle.com/
You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx
At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.
As an example...
December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx
March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...
May 2006's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-may.mspx
January 2007's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-jan.mspx
Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

Not much there at all... Not if you take a minute to break it down into
parts...
The first part helps if you know the last month you got updates - then you
download each month's ISO and burn to CD that your desktop doesn't have.
The second part has a couple of applications you could utilize that
essentially do all the work for you - so you have *all* the updates and can
write them to external media to get to your desktop machine.
The third part is using the Windows Update Catalog to get updates.
The fourth part would be using those updates you got in one of the three
ways above and integrating it into your installation media - which you
may/may not need.
The fifth part is *another* way of seeing what updates were released in a
given month so you can read and see which ones apply to you.
The sixth part just shows you that you can get office updates as well.
The seventh part literally gives you the links to every update (from SP2
through April 2007) that you might need on a Windows XP system. If you
followed each link and downloaded the patch/update from the corresponding
"IT Professional" version of the web page - you would have every update in
one single place - where ever that might be.
However - your best solution - depending on what you mean by 'wireless' - is
to purchase some external device to allow you to use the same internet on
your desktop that you use on your laptop. That is more difficult if, by
wireless, you mean something like a cellular modem. If it is just wireless
in terms of actual wireless internet (like with a wireless router connected
to cable/dsl) - then a simple $40-$100 USB device would give you high-speed
on your desktop.
