My issue is this: I have no "official" IE7 icon on my desktop. All avenues
of pursuit that I know, including modifying the "HideDesktopIcons" (or
something like that) method. There is no checkbox in desktop properties that
I can check. Please help

this took care of the issue. I had tried this method before, as described
in my post, but must have navigated to the incorrect key (ehck!) No I will
have to chase down my error, or I can simply do yet another clean install,
which is what started this problem in the first place.
