I have a new Dell XPS 400 desktop with Windows XP that has begun to open and
display the following window at the very end of a boot up.

c:\program files\dell

How can I stop this annoyance?
Don

There should be a BIOS option to turn this off.

It has nothing to do with the BIOS. See Wesley Vogel's answer for the
solution.

Wes,

I tried your link to the solution. Here's what I found.
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE etc leading me to RUN showed no entry for DELL QUICKSET.

The HKEY_CURRENT_USER choice under RUN showed the DELLSUPPORT entry to already
have the double quotes.

What next?
Don

Don,

Follow the instructions here...

How to generate a startup log using MSINFO32
http://www.winxptutor.com/msinfo32.htm

And post back with the contents of the startup entries.

Copy and paste the contents of startuplog.txt.

Wes,
Where I see the DELL SUPPORT line under the HKEY_CURRENT USER....RUN, can I
just delete that entry to solve my problem of the Dell folder opening at bootup?
Or am I messing with something I shouldn't?

Mein Gott! You have a lot of crap starting.

Get rid of this...

DellSupport "c:\progra~1\dellsu~1\dsagnt.exe" /startup DGXK0BB1\Don

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/DSAgnt.exe-11581.html

ehTray c:\windows\ehome\ehtray.exe

Are you running MCE? Windows Media Center Edition?

Get rid of this...

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
NvCplDaemon rundll32.exe c:\windows\system32\nvcpl.dll,nvstartup

No NVidia crap needs to run.

This may be a culprit. Get rid of it or add the double quotes.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
DMXLauncher c:\program files\dell\media experience\dmxlauncher.exe

DMXLauncher.exe is part of Dell's Media Experience software, which enables
you to manage and play music and digital video files. This is a
non-essential program. Disabling or enabling it is down to your preference.

There a lot more startup items that you probably do not need. Google the
somename.exe to find out what they are.
