My computer worked well until a few days ago. Now I only get a blank screen.
After I boot the system and login, the screen goes blank. There is no
desktop, no icons or taskbar. I can't right-click, but I can use Ctrl+Alt+Del
to get to the Task Manager.
This is the deal:
- No icons or taskbar after logging in to Windows.
- Desktop is blank and right-click does not work.
- Ctl-Alt-Delete to initiate Task Manager
- Can't start Explorer.exe (it isn't and will not run)
- System Restore doesn't work
I've used f8 to try and troubleshoot and nothing there works. The Safe Mode
only displays black screen with the words "Safe Mode" in every 4 corners of
screen. That screen is blank also.
I haven't installed any new software and I do have Virus software running.
My computer was working fine until this happened.
Any ideas on what to do next...I don't want to reformat unless there is no
other option...I'd lose a lot of information!
Thanks in advance,
TC
This generally has to do with display drivers. If you recently ran MS
updates or similar, try a rollback via the Device Manager. If not/ or
either:

How is supposed to roll back a driver when he cannot even get explorer
to run?
@ TC
Insert your Windows XP disk and boot to it, do a repair install and
your files will be fine. You WILL however have to perform all the
critical updates to XP again as it will wipe them out.
