Opinions with regard to windows updates and problems associated/

I have heard in the past some people advocating not to install every single
windows update that is available.
Now I have just read that one of the updates can cause problems to xp.
This one:

Installing security update MS05-019 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
may cause network connectivity between clients and servers to fail
In simple terms, can this be the cause occasionally when I find that I can't
connect to a website on someones server. This happens occasionally I have
noticed.
Could this be the cause. I use a normal pc with a dial up connection to one
of the UK's top ISP providers.
I understood absolutely ZERO of what was on microsofts technical page. How
is the average guy supposed to know what is a MTU update or a WAN or a LAN?
Or Domain controller replication across WAN Links?
This is an example of how these are not of any use to the ordinary user.
could someone explain to me in ordinary language what the problem is?

Hi Bear!
I am on a private pc from home using dial up connection to a national ISP. I
don't know exactly what is a router. I have one in the garage I use for
making shapes in wood if thats any help? :)

Then you don't need to worry about this one.
One of the disadvantages of Microsoft's Windows XP trying to be all things
to all people is that you are sitting at home trying to get onto the
internet with the same software that those of us who build complex business
networks for a living use.
This sadly means that you'll find stuff like this which is important in a
business setting and which doesn't matter to a home user, and conversely in
a business setting we often trip over features that are designed to make
internet connections easier for home users.

Thanks Robert, yah well many guys do work remotely from home, and I think
your talking about big corporations with big complex internet based systems
that link up lots of computers.

Servers can be used for many things, but in this case it's referring to a
business application where there is one server and many, many client
computers. Picture some building like Wal-Mart headquarters.
Server
A computer connected to a network that other computers may or may not
access.

Yes it does! in fact these microsoft newsgroups are a huge huge help. I use
the computer for a living, I cant' afford to take my computer to a repair
man every time somethign has gone wrong. Through these newsgroups I've
learned how to handle most problems myself and more importantly how to
prevent problems from arrising not to mention getting the most out of my pc
and saving hours hunting for information that explains things. Excellent
service and thanks to all the people who make it what it is! Eg. Invaluable.

In general install only critical updates and security fixes. Never
install driver updates for the WU site. Go to the device manufacturer's
site for that and then only do a drive update if it cures a specific
problem you're facing or there is a new feature you must have.
For other offered updates look at each one and decide if you need it.
Some might not apply.
Install updates one at a time and work with the system a bit after each
one to see if there is a problem. If not go to the next one. If so
uninstall it if there is a uninstall capability. If you're doing a
clean install of windows and so have quite a few updates to apply from
WU do them in small batches, maybe three at a time at most.
Always have a full backup beforehand to fall back on.
