so my grandparents have recruited me to try and fix their computer.
I am fairly knowledgeable with computers but this one has me stumped.
Upon startup of their XP system an error window pops up that it cannot
find Oleauts32.dll with lsass.exe and services.exe window heading for
the two different message windows. It says reinstalling the .dll file
would probably fix the problem. when i click ok the pointer will just
sit at a blank screen. we have already done a system recovery and it
is still not fixed. what do i do? do i need to change the .dll
to.old and install vbrun60.exe? thanks for your help!

OLEAUTS32.DLL or OLEAUT32.DLL?

Is the machine running WinXP SP2 or SP3?

Is Automatic Updates enabled and is the machine fully patched?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is the
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

They live in the country so I'm sure automatic updates is enable but rarely downloads the updates. I believe they said that they had norton on there, but i was going to install AVG and peer guardian. Ad-aware and Spybot are currently installed.

Do NOT install AVG 8.0 unless (1) their Norton subscription is expired and
they have no interest in renewing it, (2) you uninstall anything named
Norton, as well as LiveUpdate via Add/Remove Programs, and then (3) run the
Norton Removal Tool!

I am positive is is OLEAUT32.DLL. I cannot understand why the startup
will only go to a blank screen with the pointer and then reboot. I
still get the same messages as mentioned above and now another one
stating that the system is not fully installed. I cannot even get to
the desktop in safe mode! sorry it has taken me so long to get a
response, i have been out of town. thanks again for all your help and
input!

All right, then. In your first post, you said OELAUTS32.DLL: "Upon startup
of their XP system an error window pops up that it cannot find
Oleauts32.dll..."

Given the current state of affairs described in your last reply, you'd best
format & reinstall Windows. If you can't find the CDs that came with the
computer, there may be a hidden Recovery partition you can use to return the
machine to OOBE state. Contact HP for assistance.

Or take the machine to a local, reputable, and independent (i.e., not
BigBoxStore USA; not the Geek Squad) shop.

Good luck.

yea i saw that, my bad. i know for a fact that there is a recovery
partition on the machine...no disks came with it. I already tried the
recovery option that is supposed to reinstall the system back to
default but no luck there. would it be a good shot in the dark to try
and find just the oleaut32.dll exe file and put it on a cd and set the
computer to boot from the cd drive first so that it installs? If not,
I will just break the bad news to them..thanks again for your help.
