In trying to solve a "challenge" dealing with a certain software on my
laptop, I want to create a shortcut to the data file on my home LAN. That
will work fine.

But the problem is that I want to pin that shortcut to the start menu. Bill
won't let me!!

Any ideas, solutions??

If you want a screenshot I'll send you one. But you'll have to beg for step by step instructions. You've already know the general solution. Dragging.

Let's try to be polite and keep it civil...

I have no problem pinning a shortcut to the Start Menu, either using the
right-click menu choice or dragging it, as long as that file resides on the
local machine.

The problem is that neither method seems to work (choice not even there on
right-click!) if the actual file resides on one of my other home LAN
machines. I can put a working shortcut to the file on my Desktop, menus,
etc., but am prevented from pinning it to the Start Menu.

Maybe my original (& only) post wasn't clear enough.

Can we try again? Thanks.

Drag to All Programs, Drag from All Programs to the New Start Panel. Things you pin are not shortcuts but a link to the original file.

The items on Start Panel ARE the original file. They are NOT shortcuts. Just a different view of the original item.

No problem dragging to All Programs... works fine. Just can't get it to the
main (left column) Start Menu. Not sure what you mean by "New Start Panel".

Remember, no problem as long as it's a local file. The problem arises for a
file on another machine. Maybe this is somehow not allowed by Windows? XP
Home, BTW.

David, do you have a LAN there? If so, try this...

Take any *.txt file that is on your local machine. Create a shortcut on the
desktop. No problem to drag to the start button and place it on the Start
Menu column where you want it.

Now, try the same with a file that resides on another LAN machine. I think
you'll see what I mean then. Fine for a link on the desktop, all programs or
anywhere BUT the start menu.

BTW, sorry for our differences this a.m. You thought I had made another post
on this that was already answered. It wasn't me and didn't answer the
question. I saw your response and went "What the hell is this guy talking
about?"

I experimented on the first exe file I found which was Word 5.5 for Dos. I tried again with a win16 executable and it won't drag or allow a shortcuts target to be changed.

I can't go any further as I can no longer access network paths (the dragging did something including making OE NOT my default mail client - go figure that one), so the work arouds I try don't work. This doesn't mean they won't work for you though. Even Word 5.5 no longer works.

I have 16 months of experiments (including making bugs) on my install, and I'm usually to lazy to reverse them, so... I've never understood why MS won't allow us access to our own passwords but I don't do new install cos I don't know what my passwords are.

Try putting any shortcut on the Start Panel (what it's called in the registry to distinguish it from the older ordinary SM - they also use StartMenu2) and then edit the properties to the network path.

Try using a dos shortcut (as it will allow pifs to go on just apparantly not a lnk).

David.... found the solution from someone else. Sorry to year that you're
having problems. Thanks anyway for trying to help.

Here's the solition:

1. Move the file from the LAN drive to the local drive.
2. Create a shortcut. (lets you rename and change icon)
3. Pin that shortcut to the Start Menu.
4. Move the file back to the LAN drive.

Somehow that proceedure "tricks" XP. Otherwise I couldn't to it.

Any idea as to where those items pinned the the Start Menu are stored? I
looked through drive folders and did some Registry searches and came up
blank. Gotta be somewhere!

Anyway, thanks again for trying to help, in spite of our earlier
misunderstanding.

Regmon is a freeware program which can monitor all registry access. It shows that pinning a program
to the Start menu alters three values under the key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage]

The values modified are:
'Favorites'
'FavoritesChanges'
'FavoritesResolve'

If you open the edit window for favorites or favoritesresolve, you'll see bits and pieces which
refer to the pinned shortcuts.

Thanks, Keith, for solving a mystery. How could I have missed something so
