2nd post -- CD Writing copied my Root Drive!!!!

I'm using XP SP2. By accident, the contents of my C drive got put
into the holding place for file that are ready to be written to CD. I
cannot delete them, because doing so deletes the actual files on the C
drive. I can't figure out how to get those items OUT of the "ready to
write to CD" place. Plus, I'm getting multiple taskbar popups
reminding me to write them to CD.

It's easy to put file into the "Write to CD" place (D: drive), but
impossible? to get them out??

Please help! .......

Whenever you put files into the CD Burner folder for them to be written
to a CD unless you cut and pasted those files into the CD Burner folder
the actual files aren't located in that folder. Windows XP copies a
temporary duplicate set into the folder. Therefore, you can delete all
the files waiting to be written because they are not the actual files
that windows is using.

Let me get this right before I delete the files in the CD Burner
Folder --
They are just COPIES of the actual files?
The entire contents of my C:/ drive are in the CD Burner Folder. Since
I have just a single partition on this computer, that means EVERYTHING is in
the CD Burner Folder.
I can delete those files and I will still have the originals in my root
C:/ drive?

Feeling nervous ...

Go to your recycle bin (click the icon) and recover it from there. Hope you
haven't emptied it or had it turned off!

I don't understand what's going on otherwise so can't help with your
original question - something doesn't sound right.

My next suggestion is to turn off the windows xp cd burning. By doing
this it should release the files that are in it's queue. Below is
instructions on how to do that...

Enable/Disable CD Burning for the Local Machine

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer

Modify/Create the Value Name [NoCDBurning] according to the Value Data
listed below.
Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] // Value Name: NoCDBurning
Value Data: [0 - Enable Burning / 1 - Disable Burning]
Exit Registry and Reboot

If you do use Nero or Roxio to burn CD's you can just leave that option
disabled. Otherwise, you can re-enable it to have that option again.

I mean no offense, but I think it's rather dangerous to have this poster
working in their registry. There are better, safer ways to attack this
issue.

first, then export keys before I modify anything.

In fact, my working in the registry was successful!

I FIXED it!

I went through the registry looking for "CD Burning" and found an entry for
my logon name that pointed to the C root drive. I modified it by pointing
it to C:\CD Burning. I logged off, and logged onto a second account. The
second account worked fine. I logged back onto my regular account, and the
CD Burning folder is EMPTY! And all my data is fine. :-)

No apologies needed. You and the other fix-it experts in these newsgroups
have been my saving grace. Sometimes a reg fix is really the best way to
deal with a problem. I suggest that you wonderful fellows DO include advice
for a reg fix, along with a BIG WARNING and DISCLAIMER about working in the
registry.

I don't see your role as protecting people from themselves, but rather
offering suggestions that might work. In the end, it's up to us to protect
ourselves and to choose the advice that we think we are capable of
understanding and following. And avoiding the bad advice that is
occasionally offered by people who haven't followed the whole thread, or by
trolls.

Giving us suggestions for reg fixes is a wonderful way for us to start to
learn how to manage our own computers.

I THANK again, Moonsurfer, who first suggested the reg fix. Although I did
not implement his suggestion, it led me to looking in the registry and
ultimately finding a bad data value.

WHEW! I'm sure glad I got this one fixed! It was driving me NUTS!
