Java and Javascript are not the same. Java requires a separate
interpreter be installed to support that language. Javascript is built
into whatever web browser you are using (and why Javascript doesn't
always run the same on every web browser because each thinks their way
is better).
You need to go into the security zone under which the web site is being
rendered. In the status bar of IE, look to see which security zone is
shown for the site you are currently visiting. It could be the
Internet security zone. If so, go into Internet Options -> Security,
select the Internet security zone, scroll down to the Scripting
section, and make sure active scripting (Javascript) is enabled.
If you're not into customizing the security zones then click the Default
button, if enabled, under each security zone to reset IE to use the
default settings for each security zone. The default settings for the
Internet security zone is to enable scripting.

I've never noticed those and thus haven't even looked at them, so no
help there. It sounds like a possibility though and worth trying. If
it's not a fix, set them back until you can learn more about them.
Watch out that you aren't enabling something for untrusted sites or
anything like that. On a quick scan, all I find similar to what you
mentioned is for untrusted sites, NOT something you want to allow
scripts on if you don't have to.
It's a long shot but have you previously done what this page talks

Compatibility View mode in IE8 has it render the web page in "quirks
mode" which means it uses the rendering engine of IE7. Since you are
using IE7, you are already using IE8's Compatibility View mode.

If your bank site is getting rendered under the Restricted Sites
security zone then its domain was added to that security zone. That
also means that few features of HTML are allowed in rendering the web
page. The whole point of the Restricted Sites security zone is to
neuter a web page to eliminate advanced features, which includes
scripting.
You don't want a site listed in the Restricted Sites security zone
unless you are specifically attempting to neuter that site which removes
a lot of functionality from web pages.
When you visit the bank site, what security zone is shown in the status
bar of IE?

I just went to that web page. No error message about Javascript. I
clicked on the Login button. Got an error because I didn't enter any
login credentials. I just wanted to check if their Javascript worked on
that page. It did. So it must be the next web page that reports a
Javascript problem; however, I don't have an account there so I cannot
login to get to the next web page.
You could try adding their domain to the Trusted Sites security zone.
If that doesn't work, you'll have to contact them to report that IE8
cannot use their web site. They may be incorrectly detecting the web
browser connecting to them and screwing up on that detection. For
example, they may look for a range of UA (user agent) strings that web
browsers report to identify themselves but the UA string for IE8 is not
in their list.
You have, of course, asked the bank if it's OK to use that rev, right?
I remember when IE6 came out; one of my banks wouldn't allow it for
quite some time after it was released. It's easy to tell what browser
is being used, so they apparently checked the browsers and versions when
you logged in. That particular bank even today will only allow IE for
accessing accounts. None of my other financial places seem to care
though.
A long shot I suppose, but worth asking to make certain.
Twayne
Because some sites look for specify UA strings to identify which web
browser is being used, and because they may not yet have added the UA
string for a later version of IE. You can install an add-on that has IE
lie to the site as to which web browser version it is (i.e., it makes IE
report a different UA string).
http://www.ieaddons.com/en/details/other/UAPick_UserAgent_Switcher/
After starting IE, use the UA Pick toolbar button to open the dialog
from where you select which UA string that the web browser will report.
See if picking the IE6 UA string works. If it does, the bank site is
screwed up and needs to get the web pages updated regarding the
detection of which web browser is being used to render its web pages.
Unless I missed something, Dallas is using IE7, not IE8 (check his sig).
Until you fix your IE issue, why not try another Web browser for now?
Opera, Firefox, and K-Meleon are all very good. Links:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/
You don't even need to make your alternate browser the default one.
Whenever you want to use it, simply double-click the desktop shortcut
icon.

<snip>
My total was 8932 (using IE8), 8908 with add-ons disabled. I'm on cable
broadband (12Mbps, or higher, for bandwidth). I'm using a 7-year old
host (AMD Athlon XP 3200+ single core, 2GB RAM). Something is really
slowing down your IE, like maybe an add-on. See if it speeds up if you
run IE with all add-ons disabled.
IE (any version) has the slowest Javascript engine (Jscript). Firefox
is about 3-4 times faster, Chrome is even faster, and Safari bounces
around in its new releases to be slightly faster or slower than Chrome.
So anything involving Javascript for IE is slow (and why Microsoft
better get their head out of their butts if they want to compete as a
platform for the evolving AJAX web apps and desktops showing up).
Nothing would run from that site unless Javascript was working in your
web browser. They build the pages dynamically using Javascript. If
scripting isn't enabled, all you get is a <HTML></HTML> web page (i.e.,
it's empty). So that it runs means Javascript *is* enabled in your web
browser. It is the bank site that farked; however, your score is
exceedingly poor which indicates you have something severely slowing the
performance of your web browser.

1. There is still some setting in IE that needs to be changed
2. You need to close IE and empty the browser cache and run IE again
3. There is a plugin or a third-party program interfering with IE's
scripting
or
4. You may have malware
I am glad that Opera is working for you. The first thing I would do is
close IE, empty the browser cache (there are many different ways to do
this; if you need guidance, post back) and reboot. And checking for
malware is always wise. If no joy, give us a complete list of all your
security programs (firewall, antivirus, antispyware, etc.).
Good luck!

Still, you may want to try IE in the No Add-Ons mode, just for good
measure. Finally, you could try a Clean Boot:

(which, of course, can and should be reversed)

Yep. I didn't bother following the other subthreads because your visit
to the webkit site's javascript test page showed that you DO have
Javascript enabled in your web browser. However, your performance
results are extremely poor so you need to find out what is causing the
slowdown. I don't remember if you tried using IE in its no add-ons
mode. If not, try the javascript test page again to see if the results
speed up.
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp?locale=en&host=www.java.com#win
I see Java (TM)6 Update 4 & 5 in Add/ Remove.
once on that java page, it says :
"Verifying Java Version
Oops! You don't have the Java installed or you have a version less than
1.4.2"
but when I click on the D/L Java, it only has 2 windows options, both for
xpvista, none for xphome.
so am confused more than ever now

I think you may be misreading that; doesn't it actually it's for XP AND
Vista? There is no such thing as "XPVista" so I assume you may have
midread it.
Gee, you're getting quite a runaround, aren't you? It does sound like
the Java you do have is so old it's not usable anymore. The link you
were sent to was good, but here's one that will make it easier:
-- Go to http://www.sun.com/download/
-- There should be 8 boxes there: the upper left one is called simply
Java.
-- Click the Java box and that will take you to a page to download
version 6, update 14, the latest version for personal computers. That
is what you need.
-- Click the Free Java Download button on that page and you'll go to
another screen that says it's for "Windows Vista, XP, 2000, 2003 and
2008 Server ". And, there's another button there to click to download
Java.
-- Click THAT one and the download will begin. Be sure to save it to a
folder where you'll be able to find it.
-- Once it's downloaded, shut down any programs you might be using, do
a Restart, go to that folder and run the program you just downloaded.
Java applications should work OK for you now. The usual indication
that a java application is downloading and about to run is an arrow or
other small symbol running in a curcular motion.
If you have any problems, check back, but I don't think you will. The
screens, once you click that upper-left Java picture, are all self
explanatory and the only unexpected thing is, they make you clidk to
downoad it more than once. Stupid, but it's always been that way AFAIK.
Once you have it installed, it should ask to be updated on its own in
the future. It has a checker that goes out to see if there are any
updates available and if there are notifies you of them. I use it and
it works well; no ads, junk or anything else associated with it; works
just the way it's supposed to.
Best of luck,
Twayne`

Yep, still around but I only keep posts for 10 days in my newsreader.
Although I don't see it in the threads, and after suggesting using the
web site to verify if Javascript was enabled in your web browser (which
proved it was), I sent another post saying to see what happens when you
run the same web test with add-ons disabled in IE.
Your times are excessively long at that test web site. Something is
causing the slowdown. First to check are add-ons so disable them all
(by running IE in its no add-ons mode).
i dont know how to start ie w/out add ons so i have disabled a few; spybot,
windows messenger, shockwave flash object & drive letter access from sonic
solutions.
what i have left are:
information card signin helper from m/s
java plug in 2 ssv helper from sun microsystems
jqsiestart detector impl class (not verified) from sun microsystems
i closed ie & started it again & still have the javascriopt error message
from the bank site
could any of the 3 i listed as still enabled causing this ? guess i can
disable them - duh me
ill do that & close & re-open ie & see
oh, i missed your post re: to run the test again without any addons - will
do that & do you want 2 tests results or is running it once good enough ?
thanks very much

I don't have the post showing your original timings, but it seems you
are about half of what you reported before. That's better but still
pretty long. However, from what I've seen reported for this benchmark,
my timings are about 4 times longer than in those reports. So it could
be due to my older hardware not being able to punch through as many
instruction cycles per second as newer hardware used in those reports,
or I have more background processes running than they did. The same
would go for you regarding [old] hardware and lots of background
processes sucking up memory and/or CPU cycles.
As a last resort test, I'd reboot into Window's Safe Mode and disable
the anti-virus program (if still enabled) and retest to see if the
timing score got any better.
That all the Javascript tests pass regardless of how long they take
proves that Javascript is enabled in the web browser. Something else is
screwed up at the bank site. However, you said their tech said it was a
problem with [your] Java which is NOT a Javascript problem. I access a
couple of banks online and a few more over the years and haven't had one
that used Java. Its requirement puts a crimp in compatibility amongst
all their customers. Not all of them can install Java or have a
compatible version of it installed, like when at a resort and using
their computer room or going to Kinkos or a library to use their
computers where you're not allowed to install any software. For
accessibility by all their customers, they should be providing a
non-Java access method.
Did you uninstall ALL versions of JRE (Java Runtime Environment) and
then install just the latest JRE?
What version of IE are you using?
question on paragraph 2; as usual, i am confused. i can disable the av
program without being in safe mode, or is it different disabling in normal
mode? also, i just checked & it's not enabled. what is enabled at this time
are the following:
free threaded xml dom document 4.0
shockwave flash object
xml dom document 6.0
xml http 6.0
xsl template 6.0
re: paragraph 3; he still thinks its my pc & not the banks system. he said
he would contact the software makers & see if they have an answer. ha! my
weak point to him was i changed absolutely nothing on my pc & everytime
prior i had no probl;ems logging in then one day, bam, i can't get in. that
said, i can with operas browser, but i don't like opera, but if i have to i
will change, reluctantly.

java (tm) 6 update 14
"" "" 4
"" "" 5
I'll remove all 3 & go to java & install the latest update. but now that
begs this question from me; why does it only list those 3 updates but not
just plain old "java" by itself ?

Sounds like leftovers from many dfferent releases of JRE installations.
This whole posting has gone on a lont time. Probably time to just do a
major cleanup on your machine. It'll take time - but far less than you have
put into this conversation. ;-) 26 days - what's 6-8 hours more?
Make sure you have removed all prior versions (1.4.2, 1.5/5, 6, all updates)
using Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs and then removed the
%programfiles%\Java folder completely (erase - reboot if you have to, safe
mode if you have to.)
Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):
SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/
MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/
After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.
Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
Reboot.
Fix your file/registry permissions...
Ignore the title and follow the sub-section under "Advanced Troubleshooting"
titled, "Method 1: Reset the registry and the file permissions"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377
Download/Install the latest Windows Installer (for your OS):
( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe )
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en
Reboot.
and...
Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:
Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.
Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.
(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...
Reboot.
Then follow the instructions here:
How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
Reboot.
and..
Log on as an user with administrative rights (assuming you are in this case
- given your problem) and open Internet Explorer and visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)
Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.
Reboot again.
If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time.
The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" ones for
now. I would completely avoid the Optional Hardware updates. Also - I do
not see any urgent need to install Internet Explorer 8 at this time.
Then you should do some further cleanup...
In order:
How to use Disk Cleanup
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312
How to scan your disks for errors
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
How to Defragment your hard drives
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848
Followed by a run (not the registry cleanup yet - just the File/Folder/App
cleanup) by CCleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim
After *all* that - download, extract and run this:
http://download.softpedia.com/dl/a9a7fa6a3d28878751e596b34d7db773/4a5a2dc5/100097297/software/system/JavaRa.zip
Close all open applications, run it. choose your languuage, Remove older
versions, You are sure you want to proceed.
Reboot.
Download and install the latest version of JRE:
(7/12/2009 - JRE 6 Update 14)
https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=jre-6u14-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer
Now - that you have done that - try your bank site.

this i can tell you, as i did in one or more of my posts(26 days total, but

adaware, avg's a/v with real time running in the back, spyware blaster,
spybot & use ccleaner every 3 or 4 days - the others once a week or 10 days.
i also use disk clean up about 1 every day or two & when i analyze for
fragmentation, it says i dont need to; about 6 weeks back, it said i needed
to so i ran it then.
i also check disk about every 2-3 weeks & check both boxes in said window.

The point wasn't to disable just the AV program. It was to disable MOST
of any startup programs, including the AV program, to provide a cleaner
environment under which to load the web browser and render web pages.

Uninstall all versions of Java.
Delete the remnant C:\program files\java folder.
Install just the latest version of Java.
"It's because "Java" covers a lot of territory, actually. There are many
versions if you look around their site, besides versions for different
revs of operating systems, developers, users only, programmers, etc.
etc. etc.. I don't recall all the types but there are quite a few of
them ... and thay are all "Java" when discussed in the aggregate..
It's sort of like your running Windows. There are several flavors and
revs but the aggregate is generally just referred to as "Windows" unless
there is a need to specify a certain one.
