What version of Media Player?
If 11, try uninstalling it and reverting back to 10.
If 10, try re-installing 'CinePlayer'.

If you do not mind - can you point me to the patch they told you to
download?
Also - if you do not mind - are you running Media Player 11 and/or Internet
Explorer 7.0?
I ask the former in case anyone else searches and gets to this thread
through something like google groups and I ask the latter for my own
curiosity as to what might have caused the issue - because previously I have
personally ran into Dell systems where certain things were dying because of
Media Player 11.

I struggled with this problem for a few hours and found that installing
codecs from http://ac3filter.net/ worked. Several others I tried didn't
work.
