In the last few days when ever I close my machine I get the message:

MCCWSA window not responding and I need to close it manually. Can anyone
tell me what this is, where it is likely to have come from and how to get
rid of it.

I am running Windows XP Home SP2 and IE7.

Graham.

I did a Google for "MCCWSA" and didn't get anything useful. Something is
running in the background and not shutting down gracefully. It could be
malware (always a strong probability when a Google search doesn't pop up
an answer for a name) or it could be something legitimate.

The first step is to determine whether your computer is completely
virus/malware-free. The second step, if the computer is clean and you
still get the error, is to do clean-boot troubleshooting to find the
culprit.

A. Step 1 - Malware scanning

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to
do all scans in Safe Mode.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions
http://pcdid.com/Multi_AV.htm - download

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

B. Step 2 - Clean-boot troubleshooting

Clean boot in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
Clean-boot advanced troubleshooting in Windows XP -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434
How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP -

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA). Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at
removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested
that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all your data backed
up before you take the machine into a shop.

Thanks Malke. I also Googled this thing before posting here and found a
couple of other questions on other sites but no answers. It seems this has
only just appeared. I have done the obvious virus, adware and malware checks
with the tools I have but I will work my way through the list you have
kindly provided and report back if/when I track this thing down.

Graham.

Malke,

I have finally tracked the thing down. It turned out to be part of an auto
*** upgrade*** package sent out by my ISP. Unfortunately the package shares
nothing in common name wise with thing throwing the error so it took a
while. It is now disabled and the ISP is "investigating"

Thanks again for you help I have saved your post for future reference if
something really nasty ever gets through..

Graham.

I'm glad you got this sorted. Thanks very much for posting the solution.

My Wife and I have solved and FIXED the problem, go into START/RUN/
TYPE "msconfig" and in the Startup Tab UNTICK BT Help Notifier and
Click APPLYclose out and reboot your PC. On rebooting put a tick in
the in the Msconfig Startup window and REBOOT a SECOND time. The
"MMCWSAWindow Error has now GONE.
Yours Dranel & Tenaj.
PS. Could you spread the WORD to other's on the NET as we have to now
go shopping. Thanks.
