I recently had trouble with my cable internet and replaced my
modem...then the network operations had to force my modem to work
probably because of some update...anyway, since then, my XP startup
has been lagging and I read online it's probably due to connecting to
the network using DHCP...how can I correct this? I even did the
spyware removal and disabled startup items I didn't need, etc. Hope
someone can help me out here..shutdown is great as before, but startup
lags when icons appear and then can't do anything for over a min.

another thing that I have just noticed is that I ear a popping sound
after XP loads..it's the sound you hear when say a pop up balloon
would appear, but I have the balloon tips disabled...maybe whatever
that sound means, might have something to do with my start lag..when
it happes the taskbar pops up as well and then I move off of it then
it goes back to autohide.

just did a sound check in my audio and sound devices...the popping
balloon sound was linked to system notification servies. I don't see
any error pop up though...gonna google some more and hope that someone
can help me out.

sorry to post again so fast, but checked event viewer and got this
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address
(0xcfc), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This
could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor
for technical assistance.

what directions would that be? I read a lot of sites that had that
problem...microsoft says update the BIOS..I have an older pc and no
updates for my BIOS...looked into BIOS updates months ago...I still
never found out if anyone found an actual solution that worked
really...this is causing my pc to freeze and I have to push the power
button to reboot...I am sure this is also causing my start lag as
well...

Mooky,

To help you out - this is the 'previous post' that Phil is referring to:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics/browse_frm/thread/d59cba8a50170f5e/fc44e8292141a5b6?lnk=st&q=&rnum=2#fc44e8292141a5b6

This particular post can be seen in full here:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics/browse_frm/thread/b2e9440f455dae14/7b1e429955a0b60b?lnk=st&q=&rnum=10#7b1e429955a0b60b

This other post from you leads me to believe you have some serious HARDWARE
issues you need to resolve - most likely due to defective/mismatched memory.
Some possiblilty of power issues and/or a bad motherboard.
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics/browse_frm/thread/34222c257e65c5c0/4164569a071a82bd?lnk=st&q=author%3Amooky&rnum=17#4164569a071a82bd

And last - I see you had some serious cable modem issues before you got it
replaced - so there is a possibility it was your network card/network card
driver this whole time - have you updated your motherboard chipset and
network card drivers from the manufacturer's download support web sites?

as I said earlier...I have an older motherboard with the via chipset
and already had all the updates I can get..I know it wasn't my network
card drivers...already tried that before I got the modem upgrade...I'm
getting the full speed I paid for since the modem upgrade...the AMLI:

ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port

A good computer repair shop is indicated.

yeah..I read your other thread...my main thing is the acpi:bios
error....as I said earlier, i8s what I believe to be the problem. I
have used spybot, ad aware, AVG antivirus...removed whatever spyware I
found, but startup is so damn slow...everything else is fine such as
shutdown time is fast as always...I just started having this problem
with the super slow boot....boots up normal at first, but when the
desktop comes up and teh icons load...takes a few mins before I can do
anything...I can click on programs, but they don't load right away...I
just have to wait longer for some reason and then I get a pop sound
like the pop ballons in xp, but I don't have them enabled...

also wondering if it's possible to have a slow boot after a recent
defrag??? been looking into this...

_____

Defragging should result in SOME tasks being accomplished more quickly, NOT
ALL tasks. Of course it is possible for a boot to be slow after a recent
defragging - there may be completely unrelated problems. Then again, what
do you mean by boot?

A good computer repar shop is indicated. You are flailing, and likely
pushing your system deeper into the mud.
