If I have an url in a word document, or if I just use the run command, I
find that the URL is openned in the currently active Internet Explorer
window.
This is ok if you do not want a lot of explorer windows all over the place,
but not so good if you still want to see the contents of the currently
displayed windows.
Is the a switch/option/workarround that will ensure that the url is always
opened in a new browser window?
/Richard
If you're willing to use a real browser, Mozilla will do just what
you want.(*) I just tried Start >> Run with a URL, and it opened a
new tab in my already-open Mozilla window. When clicking on a link, I
can press the Ctrl key at the same time and the link will open in a
new tab. And when a Web page tried to open a new window, I get a new
tab in the same window instead. (If I really want a new window, I can
right-click and "Open in new window.")
I've had as many as 20 Web pages open in tabs within the window, nd I
can instantly switch between them.
(*) I have Mozilla with the Multizilla extension. I believe Firefox
has this tabbing behavior by default.

Go to Control Panel and double click Internet Options.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Remove the check mark from the box next to "Reuse windows for
launching shortcuts".
Click OK.
Launch IE and see if you get the desired results.
Good luck

Why not? (unless your company says you can't...... ;-) )

Go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced.
Uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts".
Also, if you have Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, MSN toolbar, a firewall,
Earthlink (or another pop-up blocker) My IE2 (a shell for IE) etc.
Yahoo Companion is a very common cause.
You'll have to turn off the feature that's blocking new windows or, perhaps,
uninstall the program (especially uninstall Yahoo Companion).
With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.
If you're *sure* that another program isn't causing this, these links may
help.
