windows update error

update service. I have a clean system, just re-installed
using the Dell original CDs that came with the D600
laptop. The restore CDs do a clean install of Windows XP
Professional, then I install my ADSL modem software,
connect online, update my virus definitions. I then go to
Start, Windows Update, and I am prompted to download and
install the new automatic update software, which I do. I
am then given 2 options, an Express and a Custom one. I
click the Express one and I am presented with the
following error:
[Error number: 0x80244018]
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display
the requested page.
I have looked at the suggested resources, but I cannot
find the exact error number. I found one error which reads
almost identically, the suggested solution of re-setting a
registry value to zero I have tried, and it does not work.
Did anyone out there find a solution to this?

fix this problem. Maybe it will help you.
First add Windows Update to the list of Trusted Site Zones.
You must set the security settings in Internet Explorer to Medium or lower
for ActiveX files to correctly pass to your computer. When you lower the
security settings, you affect only the Web sites listed in the Trusted Sites
Zone of Internet Explorer. Your current security settings for all other Web
sites remain as they are currently configured.
From the toolbar in Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Internet Options,
and then click Security.
Click Trusted Sites Zone, and then click Sites.
Click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in
this zone option.
In the Add this Web site to the zone: text box, type
https://*.microsoft.com, and then click Add.
Click OK.
Click Custom Level, and then select Enable for the following items:
Download signed ActiveX controls.
Download unsigned ActiveX controls.
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe.
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins.
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting.
Click OK, and then click OK again to exit Internet Properties.
Now check to see if the Update service is still running. Click Start,
Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System, and then the Automatic
Updates tab. Make sure that Automatic is checked and then click OK.
If you had to change anything in the preceeding steps reboot your computer
and see if Update starts working again. If everything has been OK so far,
continue on.
Now see if Automatic Updates is still running as a service. Click Start,
Run, delete what's in the Open box and type "services.msc" without the quotes
and then click OK. The Services window should pop-up. Under the name
column, around the fourth one down, should be Automatic Updates. If it is
not there go to the next paragraph. If it is double click on it. The
properties dialog box should open. Make sure it says "Automatic" in the
Startup type box and Service status says "Started". Click Ok and if you had
to make any changes above reboot the computer.
Finally if Update still doesn't work you may need to register the dll files.
Click Start, Run, delete what's in the Open box, type "cmd" without the
quotes and click OK. This will bring you to a command prompt similar to the
following
c:\WINDOWS\system32\Documents>
Type in the following and press return after each line
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll
After you finish type "exit". When you return to Windows reboot again.

carefully following all of it, I always got (and am still
getting) the same error.
Anyone else had experience of this?
