This morning I installed several new updates on an IIS 6.0 server hosting WSS
3.0. It's a standalone SharePoint installation and the same server also runs
the SQL 2005.

Once the updates were installed and the computer rebooted, all my
Application Pools were in "stopped" state with "unspecified error" as
description. Of course, all sites hosted on this server came back with
"service unavailable" page. I uninstalled four out of seven updates, 955759,
973917, 973904 and 976325 (IE8), and the sites came back online.

I had a similar experience with my client's Microsoft Dynamics CRM server.

I opted to remove only KB973917 (as described at
http://thecrmgrid.wordpress.com/2009/12/09/windows-update-killed-my-app-pool/) and now the server is working fine.

I don't understand why our default, basic installation should have had a
problem with this install, though I haven't investigated it properly yet...

This KB973917 makes me crazy. It doesn't apply to every IIS6.0
For Windows 2003 Standard SP2, it works but for Windows 2003R2 SP2 it
doesn't work.
I've tried to update the registry like written in the KB but no way
The only solution I got is to uninstall and I've to do it in 250 places at
the same time.
Thanks a lot for a thursday patch please

I am not running SQL or sharepoint on my machine, only IIS ver 6. OS is
Windows 2003 server enterprise, 32 bit, sp2. My error message(s) were, for
each app pool:

Application pool 'ASPNet1.1 App Pool' is being automatically disabled due to
a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool.

A process serving application pool 'ASPNet1.1 App Pool' terminated
unexpectedly. The process id was '3264'. The process exit code was
'0xffffffff'.

etc...

Fixed by uninstalling KB976325 then KB973917. I probably didn't have to
remove KB976325 but did because of a warning displayed when attempting to
remove KB973917 directly. I reapplied 976325 after removing 973917 and it
didn't cause a problem.

After applying KB973917 my SharePoint application pools also terminated with
exit code 0xffffffff. Fixed by uninstalling KB973917 (and associated updates
974391 and 976325).

The article listed below was updated with this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=2009746

I have reapplied SP2 as suggested (without removing KB973917) and now my
websites are working.
