the auto update keeps telling me to download and install a couple of
updates: for Outlook 2003, this one: KB892843, and this one: Microsoft
.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.
they simply will not install (one of these has been trying since November of
last year), but the updater keeps trying. What am I supposed to do?

Hi,

I suggest we follow the steps below to uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework
and then
install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Service
Pack 1
to resolve this issue.

First, let's use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove Microsoft
.NET
Framework.

1. Please download msicuu2.exe from the following link.

/msicuu2.exe>>>

2. Open it, we should be able to see the msicuu2.exe file. Double click
msicuu2.exe
to install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

3. After installing it, please go to the Start menu => All Programs and find
the
Windows Installer Clean Up item.

4. Remove any items that are related to Microsoft .NET Framework (including
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1) in the Windows Installer Clean Up
window.

After that, please download Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 from the
following
link and reinstall it.

34d1e7cf3a3&DisplayLang=en>>

Then, please download the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 from
the
following link:

83353618b38&displaylang=en>>

If they cannot be installed, please try the following suggestions.

Delete or rename the Microsoft .NET Framework installer.
-----------------------------
1. Click Start => Run. Input "installer" (without the quotation marks) and
click
OK.
2. Then the installer Windows Explorer window will be opened.
3. Click View => Details.
4. Then click View => Choose Details. Check the Comments check box in the
Choose
Details dialog box and click OK.
5. Then please check the Comments column to find the Microsoft .NET
Framework
related items in the installer folder and delete or rename them.

6. Please restart the computer and try to reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework
1.1.

Thank you

Thanks, again, Eric. (I believe you had a helpful response to another
request that I recently made, having to do with moving my OS to a new hard
drive). I will try this suggestion of yours, but most likely not until the
weekend, when I have more time (of course, if I get the new hard drive
working, I may not have this problem any longer, and this discussion will
become moot).

Thanks Eric, I kept getting messages in MS update that . Net Framework 1.1
SP1 had been downloaded and needed to be installed. The installation had
failed several times over. I had Net 1.1 and NET 2.0 plus Net 2.0 distrib
pkg. I followed your instructions and removed all .Net Framework programs,
went back and installed .NET Framework 1.1 ,then tried the install in the
update that kept failing.
Lo and behold it installed without any hitches. Thanks again.

Eric - after I loaded the Windows Installer Clean Up - I looked for
Microsoft.Net Framework 2.0 - if I removed this version, will I be going
backwards in versions? The second question, if you suggest not to remove,
why is the scan showing I need an upgrade? Thanks for any help

I am also getting this error message, and following the instructions of Eric
Brodish did not help. I did not see anything related to Microsoft.NET.

No, I have the same problem.
Ver. 1.1 & 1.1 SP1 installed no problem, but version 2 refuses to install.
Can anyone help please?

If you start your own thread you might get an answer , as the thread you
have tacked onto is a good month old - read the below and provide basic
info.
and post in the updates group in the discussion group you are using.

I already know this.

I repeat: "When I click on < New < Question , nothing happens :) ? ?"

I repeat - try using OE as your newsreader, then you only have to click "new post".

Possibly. What browser are you using? If IE what version?

BTW when others have complained about this before I always thought
it was the popup menu which was the problem but you are implying that
you can see the popup menu. In any case, I suspect the likely cause of
that symptom is still going to be a misconfigured popup stopper.
Strange that almost the identical popup window occurs in each case...
Are you already logged in at least before trying that option?
That would avoid one extra popup window (e.g. for the login).

However, to answer your question, have you tried using the web site's search tool?
Unfortunately the filters are usually either not used or misused but you could find
previous suggestions by searching with (e.g. press Alt-7 and enter): 0x66A MVP

If you want to see my previous replies on the topic search for just: 1642

Good luck

It would be a pleasure to introduce you to newsgroups

Below are some useful links to help.
You have said you do not use OE, but that does not matter.

http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:EteGV3EVJTkJ:www.fhcrc.org/about/pubs/center_news/newsgroups/acccessingnewsgroupsviaoutlooks2003.pdf+set+up+newsgroups+in+outlook+2003&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=uk

OR, if you go to Help whilst Outlook is open you should find the
instructions there as well.- in the index or search. I had the above in my
favourites - saved from when I went to setup newsgroups at work - it was
handy having some pictures :-)
At work we use O/L 2003 and I had no problem setting up 'news'.
Good luck

Most important - do not forget to munger your address i.e.
when you are making the entries in the General Tab - News Account put
'msnews.microsoft.com'
Then under User Info - choose any name say Matt the Hatt.
Then Email Address - munge this however you like - say MattNoSpam @No
Spam.com
Never disclose your real email address - newsgroups are targeted by spam
address gatherers.
Come back if you have a problem

Thank you for all your advice, Antioch. However, as Robert Aldwinckle
guessed, the problem was simply down to my pop-up blocker being on. I have
added this site to my allow list and now the 'new question' button works
fine, thereby negating the need for me to go through O/L.

Best regards,

Matt

Your suspicions were spot on, Robert. My popup stopper was the culprit (as I
explained above to Antioch). Thank you for suggesting this.

> Strange that almost the identical popup window occurs in each case...

Whats also strange was that the 'reply' button worked fine but not the 'new
question' one.

> Are you already logged in at least before trying that option?

Yes, I was logged in.

> However, to answer your question, have you tried using the web site's search tool?

Yes I've tried that, but still haven't found a solution. I'm also in
e-correspondence with MS technical support, but they too have been unable to
provide one so far.

To date I have tried the following:
Disabled my anti-virus and firewall
Deleted all the components from my c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder
Removed, then one by one manually reinstalled .NET Framework 1.1 and all of
its updates.
Someone on another support forum told me that its not a critical update
anyway (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928365), so its not worth trying to
install it. However this appears to be contrary advice to the Windows Update
page which lists it as "high priority" and "strongly recommends" its
installation.

Unless anyone has any further suggestions, or the support tech comes up with
something, I'm not too sure where to go from here. I will try searching for
your previous replies however.

Thanks,

Matt
