when I use microsoft update I get error message 0x80245003 and it won't let
me update from the microsoft update page. someone posted this url to fix the
problem
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919749/EN-US/#appliesto. I am not very
experienced and leary of trying it. If it doesn't work will it mess up my
computer if I screw it up? Does anyone know if automatic updates still work
even if you get this error message?

Please describe in more detail the difficulty you are still having after
following the instructions in 919749.

When I followed 919749, I could not tell if there were spaces in step #3:

"To work around this problem, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run,
type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, and then press ENTER.
3. Type rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir, and then press ENTER.
4. Type net start wuauserv.
5. Use the Windows Update Web site again to install updates. "

I may have not gotten this correct as it appears to me to be a space between
"r and / and a space between "s and %." If I got this wrong please let me
know.

If you got it right, then the folder
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir
and all its contents will have been deleted. It will be recreated after the
"net start wuauserv". So check for the existence of that folder after step
3: if it is still there, you didn't get it right.

Sorry to ask so many questions, but if I do this again, am I suppose to go
through all the steps again? And where do I look to determine if the folder,
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir, is gone or not?

Nikos follow the steps as stated in 919749 and yes there is a space after the
/s in step 3 the command is
rmdir (space) /s (space) %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir then press
enter

what this will do is remove the softwaredistribution directory in windows
which you can find in widows explorer in the windows directory. The next
command will reset the softwaredistribution. Shut down internet explorer and
start the windows update. That should work. I just had to do it on my
computer and it worked I can now run windows update. Good luck!!!

Yes, open a command prompt window and type the following commands:

net stop wuauserv

rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir

net start wuauserv

Record any error messages in response.

- Open "My Computer"
- Double-click drive C:
- Double-click "WINDOWS"
- Double-click "SoftwareDistribution" (scroll to find it)

Now - is the folder WuRedir there or not?

when the above was found just deleted folder and hey presto was
allowed in to windows update bit easier than typing into command prompt
