Hi,
Can you please post the contents of c:\windows\KB842773.log
Some things to verify
* Are you running as Administrator?
* Please check if c:\windows\inf\branches.inf file exists and if it is
hidden?

Hi,

I do have the same problem.
The logfile tells: Failed To Enable SE_BACKUP_PRIVILEGE
You don't have the right to update Windows XP.....
I am logged on into our domain with administrative rights and additionally I
am belonging to the local group administrators.
I also tried loggin on locally using the local administrator account and got
the same message.

I also encountered this problem on 8/17 with XP Home for KB842773 in Auto
Update (let me choose to install option turned on). So far I haven't been
able to cancel or shut it down. Moreover, this update is redundant for my
system - previosly installed from website on July 22, 2004. Occurences of
redundant auto updates is why I kepp my update setting set to "Notify but let
me install when I want".

Please see c:\windows\KB842773.log
to see if the install of KB842773 was successful on your machine.

Are you seeing that this update is being repeatedly offered?

Hi,
Please copy and paste the contents of KB842773.log into the post. You can
add attachments if you use Outlook express or some other NNTP utility to
read the posts.

Please send the file versions of qmgr.dll, winhttp.dll and xpob2res.dll (if
it exists).

In explorer, please open c:\windows\system32 dir
Following is the procedure to find the file versions of qmgr.dll,
winhttp.dll and xpob2res.dll
Locate the file in the dir, right-click and select Properties
Select the Version tab
This will show the file version.

Also, please copy and paste the "View installation history" page from your
Windows Update history.

I'm having the same issue but I am using XP Home Edition so I cannot open
secpol.msc . My User Account under the control panel says that I am an
Administrator. None of the logfiles are being created and it is not
installing. What can I do to resolve this issue?

Thanks!

I resolved this issue. Apparently there were some startup services on my
computer that interfered with the installation of this package. I ran
"msconfig" and disabled all the startup items then ran a downloaded version
of "WindowsXP-KB842773-v2-x86-enu.exe"

Hi,
Can you please post the items in your startup that you disabled? There are
some viruses/trojans which interfere with Windows patch installs.
That may help others with a similar problem.

Do you have some anti-virus installed on your machine?
