I've gone to MS Update online, and have tried to install this Flash fix
manually from there as well - but with the same result. I also went to
adobe systems, uninstalled and re-installed Flashplayer. Still won't patch.
On reboot, both appear in automatic updates.

Suggest downloading the msxml.msi for MSXML 4.0 from here:

Double click the .msi. If you are presented with 3 options, choose
Remove. If not, then the MSXML package *should* install.
When done, reboot the system if prompted to. I'd do so anyway just to be
'safe'.
Once the system is rebooted then download the hotfix:

Run msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe and that should get it installed.
There will be randomly named folders created on the root drive, C:\, or
the drive with the most free space, for every attempted installation of
the hotfix.
IF the update doesn't install properly [ your notified that it did not
or it is still being reoffered ] then open the most recently created
randomly named folder. Inside of that is the installation log,
msxml4-KB927978-enu.log. Post back with the log's contents.
You can safely delete all *other* randomly created folders if so desired.

Their MSXML 4.0 issue has also been resolved as of today. I installed
MSXML.MSI, and then manually downloaded and installed KB927978. Its working
okay. After that Automatic update made some MSOffice updates, but neither of
the above mentioned fixes has occured again
Some additional info:
Prior to performing repairs - the only folder they had left in root
contained a log I examined. It indicated one of the MSXML patches (applied
yesterday) had installed succesfully, so I don't fully understand why they
kept getting prompted to update it again this morning.
There were also some critical HP Updates that needed to be done as well, but
none of which were related to the issue here.

1. They owned an HP Desktop or notebook product - with Standalone Norton AV,
or Norton Security Suite installed. (However, in the case of my folks they
allowed the trial version to expire. I plan to remedy that by removing that

Theres one other question I have. At one point I attempted to bypass
Automatic Update, via Windows Update. The Install history showed at least 1
dozen or more successful updates of the KB 927978 fix, and 1 dozen failures
(0x643) of KB923789 since Feb 26 2007. Is there a way to reset the
patch/fix history so that Windows Update shows the PC's current fix/patch
state?

Thanks for confirming that a Symantec 'product' was installed. Someone
posted to my blog that by disabling NAV prior to installing the update,
it installed correctly without further 'gyrations'.
So ... if anyone sees this thread and is having difficulties getting
KB927978 installed properly, temporarily disable NAV before installing it.
AND REMEMBER to reenable it afterwards, please. <w>
