no updates since 14/10/04

Since installing SP2 on XP on October 14th I have had no automatic updates
I have downloaded Media Player since from the web site no problem ,I don`to
get an error message just no updates available Have tried the newsgroups but
nothing seems to fit the bill can anyone point me in the right direction
.Have tried Microsoft still waiting thanks

Can you still view the history of your installations on
the windowsupdate.microsoft.com website? What happens
when you scan for updates? Do any of the three sections
turn bold and have a number following them such as:
Critical Updates (1)

I am having the same, or a similar, problem. I am setting up a new Tablet PC
machine, w/ SP2 pre-installed. The windows update site tells me that there
are 0 updates of any kind when I scan for updates. I know at a minimum that
MP 10 was not installed, nor was HighMAT support, but neither showed. I am
certain some security updates are needed, too. I don't get any errors, just
no updates. Their is, of course, no update history, either.

I normally choose that option anyway and still get nothing.

I noticed something else peculiar as I was working on this. When I choose
the administrator options and search the update catalog, I can see all of the
updates. When I select them they go to the download basket correctly.
However, the "Download now" button is disabled so that I can't download
anything from there either.

One thing I found in my searches was that I don't have the msjava.dll file
on my system anywhere, nor does Internet Explorer's Internet Options/Advanced
tab show me the MS Java VM choices that I see on other systems. My
understanding is that the Sun Java VM should be able to handle all java
functions and it is installed and functional, but could this be part of the
problem? If so, how can I install the ms java vm?

Hi Mark,

I have a similar problem in that choosing express or custom, I do not get
any options to install any updates as well. Did you manage to resolve this?

With regards to your Java question, I do not really know how to install the
MSJVM but it seems that the Sun JVM works fine for everything that I do. It
can be installed from java.com

Ultimately, the only solution we could find was a complete reinstall of XP.
The machine came with an image from HP, but there were enough peculiarities
with it, including this one, that we felt a new installation was in order. We
did it to create our master image for the Tablets and I did it on my Tablet,
too. Everything works now, but it was a real pain.

Hmm.. That would majorly suck. Doing a complete reinstall that is. I have a
master image of my tablet of when it first arrived, but re-imaging it didn't
do anything so I hope I don't have to resort to doing a re-install. Bit wary
of doing it actually.

You don't have an HP TC1100 by any chance, do you? The installations we had
problems with were the stock image as sent by HP. After I had all my
problems, we tested with another right out of the box and found exactly the
same behavior. That is why we decided to build our own image from scratch for
duplication purposes and why I reimaged mine. I'm quite happy with it now.

ARGH! That's exactly what i have! Man, i can't believe that the only way
around this is to install from scratch :( I wonder what it is that HP has
messed up. Thanks for the info Mark. Hope this also helps any TC1100 owners
out there.

You give us clues and we try to interpret them for you.
So far there are no details to work with in either post.

What has been happening in your logs?

BTW is this using WUv5?

The things which I did when I thought I had a similar problem were:
- looked for all readable files which had been changed during the
update attempt. E.g. search for files changed on that day and
then order them by date changed, thus ordering them by time
down to a minute.
- ran FileMon during the update attempt, filtering on SoftwareDistribution
thus getting a list of all the processes and files which were using
that directory. I found this to be an excellent supplement to the
WindowsUpdate.log. In fact, I later amended my filter to include
that filename so I could see even more clearly how the two related.
- used the procedure in the troubleshooter to clean up the
SoftwareDistribution subdirectories.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for your reply. I tried some of your suggestions and here are my
responses.

1. I tried monitoring files as per your suggestion but it didn't help me
much because I don't know how to decipher the outcome.

2. I have tried various suggestions such as clearing out the
SoftwareDistribution folder, the datastore folder, the catroot2 folder etc.

3. Thanks for your tip about the google groups. I followed your link and
also did some searches but there wasn't anything new for me to follow. I've
also tried the various regsvr32 commands but they didn't work for me either.

4. I've also tried the security certificate and trusted sites suggestions
but to no avail.

Here is a fresh copy of my windowsupdate log. The first 30 or so lines are
from the computer booting up and automatic updates must be checking with the
website. The subsequent lines are from me manually going to the windowsupdate
site. However, from what I can tell, it's basically telling me that there are
no updates. This is not possible because I know I am missing updates
KB890175, KB888113, KB891781, KB885250, KB887472, KB867282, KB 873333, KB
888302, KB890047, KB887742 at the very least.

It *is* possible if *your* system isn't being told about them.
That's what tracking all that activity under SoftwareDistribution
could show you. For example, you would see .cab files and .xml
files being written there which you could examine. If they were empty
lists that would explain your symptom. Then you could blame your
symptom on the server and not worry about possible problems on
your side.

The one wrinkle in your trace that I'm less sure of because it has
come up before and if handled at all dealt with behind the scenes
by MSFT people, is the MUI factor. I'm wondering if it (or your tablet's
OEM status) makes use of WU problematic.

Hello!

I managed to solve the problem! As Robert suggested (and many many thanks to
him) that it was something related to the MUI and that indeed was the
problem! Sorry it took so long to solve but I tried so many other things and
in the end spent time researching MUI to see what I could get out of it.

What I did was to run muisetup and then remove ALL the languages except for
english. Maybe removing a few might help but I wouldn't know because now all
my languages have been removed. Once I did that the Windows Update almost
immedietely popped up in my tray menu and off I went!

Thanks to Robert again for going through this with me and to Mark also for
just pushing me to HP which then goaded me into trying to solve it without
their assistance.

Best of luck to anyone who has this similar problem.

To view your (windows update) installation history you have to look for a
file called windowsupdate.log in your windows directory.

The muisetup.exe is meant for multi-langauge setup of windows and isn't
related to windows update except for the fact that it breaks it. This is
covered in the post from Robert.
