I have this very same problem and so far no answer to it. Maybe someone here
knows more about this mess than I do. This kind of thing has happened before
with net framework and now I do not remember what I did to fix it. I just
which for once they could get it right without all the messups.

I had the same problem. Had to uninstall Net 2.0. and all Net security
updates (I had one), reboot computer, then reinstall Net 2.0 and then
download and install the latest security update. This worked for me.

KB922770 isn't installing for me either. When I go back into Windows Update,
it shows that it hasn't installed (error code 0x669 - whatever that is), but
it isn't available to try again. When I checked Add/Remove Programs, it
appears to be installed. However, when I try to remove it, the process just
hangs.

something that didn't look right--the download URL associated with this
update:

The "rs.rs.rs.rs" portion of that URL looked strange to me. Not
necessarily wrong, but suspicious. I looked elsewhere in the log for
updates that had succeeded, and they have this URL:

URL = http://rs.update.microsoft.com/odf/v6odf.xml

In any event, the advice suggested in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883821 is useless for me...

Also, downloading and running the 922770 update manually didn't work for
me either:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=34C375AA-2F54-4416-B1FC-B73378492AA6

The updater asks me if I want to install it, I click OK. Then I accept
the EULA, and ... nothing more seems to happen. The patch's logs are
huge, and while I find errors in them, I haven't made heads or tails of
any of them.

FYI: Uninstalling/reinstalling .NET 2.0 didn't help me. The KB922770
update still failed to install.

I have a legal copy of Windows XP Home (English) and the "Security Update for

no, it is not due to illegal software.

everything looks fine.... didn't enjoy the time it took, but, c'est la vie.
Suggest you also look at

Hey Jake, jdog23 here.
You are right. Illegal schmillegal. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't
think you can even download the updates unless you have previously registered
the version you're using. This happened to me before. I did have to delete
2.0 thru add/remove and then try to update again. It told me 2.0 was missing
and that once it reloaded it everything went fine. I tried that last night
though and it did not work, but I did not reboot after removing 2.0! Maybe
that's why it did not work. Dunno.
I hate when these things are released and they have so many bugs in them.
Get it right and then release it. Geeze........It's like showing up to play
baseball,(go Tigers by the way) with 6 guys, 4 gloves, a bat and no ball!!
Get it together first!!!
Any follow-up on this would be appreciated.

Well I finally got this damnable thing to work. I uninstalled .NET 2.0,
rebooted, used Total Uninstall ( http://martau.com ) to remove every
possible bit of whatever was left behind (which was a lot), rebooted
again, reinstalled .NET 2.0, rebooted yet again (hey, it's not
inconvenient or anything), then went back to MS Update and found the two
.NET 2.0 updates waiting for me. With fist clenched, ready to punch my
screen, I tried installing them, and what do you know, it worked this
time.

So maybe, like you, I simply needed to reboot after
uninstalling/reinstalling .NET 2.0. (The first time I wasted my time on
this song and dance, though, I wasn't prompted to reboot either time.)

Gotta love it.

Jake,

Sidenote: Yes, rebooting between fixes and re-install attempts is very
highly recommended.
It'll especially clear up situations where a DLL file was still somehow in
use.
In very extreme cases, clearing out all of the \Dllcache sub-folder is
necessary.

The installer should have prompted for a reboot if one was needed. (The
MSKB article that recommends uninstalling/reinstalling .NET 2.0 itself
says to reboot "if prompted".) And I had checked my
PendingFileRenameOperations registry value (probably no one knows what
I'm talking about...), and it was empty. So no file was deleted after
reboot anyway.

I doubt the reboot in and of itself did anything. My money is on the
much-more-thorough removal I obtained using Total Uninstall. Not that I
would recommend this to anyone else.

Please don't be insulting. It is not an issue of illegal software. My
copy of Windows XP is 100% ligitimate, as is every piece of software
on my computer. Yet I also had problems with the update, which took
almost four hours to fix (ultimately by uninstalling and manually
installing Net Framework 2.0).

By the way, this was the second time I had to uninstall/install Net
Framework 2.0. I also had to do so a few weeks ago when another update
failed. That also took several hours of my time.

At this point, it may be easier to just not install the MS updates.
I've had two viruses on my computer over the last five years and
fixing those were simpler and quicker than this nonsense.

I too could not install the update KB922770. Even worse, I couldn't
uninstall .net framework 2.0 from the Add or Remove software in control
panel. I received an error telling me that the patch package could not
be opened. Browsing on Microsoft's website I came across a reference to
the Windows Install Clean Up tool. I downloaded it and used it to remove
.Net framework 2.0. I then went to Add or Remove software, where there
was still an entry for .Net framework 2.0. Clicking on this allowed me
to reinstall it. Finally, I ran Windows Update again, and KB922770
installed correctly. I hope this may be of some use.

I've been carefully reading through all of these posts since I encountered a
problem with this update. I noted that the error messages differ, and the
one listed here is the one I get. My problem is, I can not uninstall or
reinstall the dotnet. I see versions 1.1, a hotfix, and 2.0 and a hotfix.
The 2.0 gives me the option to repair or uninstall. Both fail, saying the
installation package can't be found. Attempts at uninstalling any of the
others above fail for the same reason.
Can't upate, can't update with downloaded version, can't uninstall, can't
reinstall.
Is there something else I can do?

Hey Jake,
Thanks for all the effort. Here's what worked for me. Download Windows
Installer Cleanup Utility. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 Run it to
delete any reference to Net 2.0. Reboot. Then download the Net framework
for Microsoft at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 Everything worked properly then. I
had to do this because the Net 2.0 could not be removed from add/remove.
Many thanks for the help and advice.

Hi,

Use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to uninstall .Net
Framework 2.0:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/

Then install .Net Framework 2.0 again using the download link
found here:

Hi gang. Just fyi. I took an additional step. I uninstall .Net 2.0.
Rebooted.
I have a copy of Microsoft .Net 1.1. I installed it then rebooted.

Then was able to install Microsoft .Net 2.0 with the October .Net
security patches.

Thanks.

Actually I spoke too soon.
Now I can't get Windows Live Messenger to connect no matter what I do.
Messenger says I'm not connected to .net, yet I can connect to my hotmail
account on .net and have no other log in problems.
I followed the troubleshooting steps offered but so far no luck.

This update was causing me a lot of problems.

I tried the Windows Update route and it did not work.

I then downloaded the file directly and ran it that way and it did not
work.

One thing I noticed was that this update was using up tons and tons of
disk space. It created a temp file that was almost 200MB inside of
C:\WINNT\Installer.

I went through my system drive, which was low on space. After I cleared
up about 350MB of space, I reran the update from the download (as
opposed to via Windows Update) and it worked. It did take about 10
minutes to install.

So, if you are having a problem with the install, before you go through
the whole process of uninstalling / reinstalling the 2.0 framework, you
might want to make sure that you have at least 350MB space on your
system drive.

I was having trouble installing this update and looked here.. not till I got to this last entry was the question answered. I had 137MB available on a Server2000 with all updates. Only has a 4.5GB SCSI HDD for the system drive. I cleaned up 756MB and had plenty available for the update. I did nothing else, and the update installed on this old P2 350 Dual processor compaq ProLiant 800 server just fine. About7 to 8 mins install time. I have a 9.1 Gig I am going to put in but did not want to do it at this time.

Thanks to Patentable for the help.

I CALLED AND WAS CALLED BY Microsoft support perhaps because this has
been going on since around Christmas and I've a medical issue with
paralyasis of my left hand; the tech originally assigned to this hung
up the phone after holding on and going through solutions; the final
MSFT tech said that despite techs stating that this was the "first
time" they had heard of this problem, my tech said he was well aware of
this problem being posted all over Google and told me and asked if i
knew how to disable getting notice of this update and suggested I just
disable this one as it is not an important one to have installed;
that's from an upper level technician; while he took the easy way out
since frame work is such an important intrusive function (like update
search, I believe,) I believe it's a problem that Mr. Frosty is just
not addressing since the ultimate fix is too complex for a downloaded
update from the web in "one stop"...if you read through some of the
solutions, they have you check out the version number of the "Windows
Installer file; in the System 32 folder of your OS and actually don't
offer any specific solution to either remove it or add another one; my
suggestion is to wait until they either come up with another update
file or someone actually has a definitive fix that sounds more logical
than the ones I've seen before you end up breaking the "framework"
program since it's critical to much of the functionality of the XP
operating system at this point.

senior level MSFT technician finally said to disable getting notice of
this update and not worry about installing it; that's a first time I've
heard of this solution (but I believe judging from the number of google
entries) this is a problem for MSFT as they list an 800 number to
contact technicians free 1-800-936-5700; they will not charge you (or
shouldn't for update problems) but I wouldn't hold out for any useful
solutions; once you establish a case number, they'll even call you back
with (no solution, to date..this has been going on for me since early
December '06;

hi everyone,

first please be aware that i DID NOT read this whole thread so if i'm repeating something i apologize.

i had the exact problem with this annoying .net frameworks business but i found a solution that worked for me- no fuss no muss- ‘automated tool’ bada-boom. here is the link:

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx?CommentPosted=true#commentmessage

just download and run the "updated version of the .NET Framework cleanup tool " that is linked right on the top of the page.

according to his instructions you should first try to remove everything you can with windows uninstall and then run the tool to get whatever might remain. i would recommend that before running the tool or deleting anything you should look through his various pages on the subject. he seems to really know what he's about with this whole thing and there may be other considerations that apply to your particular case..

i just wanted to post this quick because it was driving me nuts for the longest time and last night i just sat down and got it FINISHED with once and for all!

And that made me happy :).

good luck everyone.
