WIN NT 4.0 backup using a SCSI Conner 8mm QIC wide. System operates fine.

Have been doing backups for some time. Got several new tapes, though, and
was doing a short backup/erase routine on each to "exercise" them. No
problems except for last tape in batch.

Put tape in drive. Normally, backup shows "no tape in drive", then
switches to "blank tape" after a few seconds. With this tape, though,
I get:

Tape device reported an error on a request to get device status.
Error reported: unrecognized data.

It appears identical to the other tapes and is freshly unwrapped. Why
am I getting this error on a brand new tape?

I have the exact same situation. I posted a message yesterday about it.
I can no longer use my old tapes though. Can you use your
old tapes? I haven't found a situation yet. The tape
drive is a HP T4000 SCSI...

Clean, clean, and clean again, using qualified cleaning cartridge (each 20
hours of opearation).
Erase unreadable tape's before using them again.
Always verify a backup.

Found the problem. Out of a group of 5 brand new tapes, one was a
different type.
Still Sony. Still same color packaging. Still same size. But if you read
the type tape,
I found it was not the same.

I had about 4 onths of intermitant tape backup problems with a Sony
SDT-7000 DAT drive. Small backups were fine, large (>1 GByte) backups
always failed verify.
I got the firmware in the DAT drive updated and it's been flawless ever
since (4 months).
