I'm assuming this is a rights/license issue...

I downloaded some songs earlier, and was playing them just fine. Then out of
nowhere I'm told:

"Windows needs your permission to continue

If you started this action, continue.

R&R installer
Microsoft Windows"

I click continue, and then I get another box saying:

"Windows Media Revocation and Renewal

You must restart the machine to continue content processing."

Which I did the first time around, I restarted the computer and everything
was fine for a few more hours and then I got the message again.

I have Vista, just got it and this computer about two months ago and I
haven't really used Windows Media 11 on it all that much before today. I'm
not sure if it's a new problem and maybe it's something that was always there
on my PC (never had this issue on my old computer that used XP and I used WMP
a lot back then).

Anyone else encountering this problem?

I have encountered this problem too...and more and more frequently.
At first I thought it might have something to do with the music downloading
service I have used and wrote to their technical support.
They provided processes which I have followed every step exactly.
However the problem problem remains....
Apparently it's Windows' problem....and they haven't publish any useful
solution yet.

I too am having the same problem after a few minutes of Dl music from Itunes
and Rhapsody. I have checcked all over the internet for a solution. I have
found others with the same problem, but no solution. This has to be a MS
Vista software issue, althought MS is eithe ignoring it, or has NO IDEA how
to fix it.

If I find a fix or hear of anything, I will surely post it here for everyone.

I had this problem.
It happened after Quicktime updated itself.
I right-clicked Quicktime on the taskbar to open the preferences.
I UNchecked any automatic updates or checking for updates, and also
UNnchecked the "show on the taskbar" (or however they actually word
it) box.
I then opened "Run". After running "msconfig" I made sure nothing
Quicktime-related was listed under "services" or "startup".

After a restart, my music plays again in Windows Media Player!

This happened again after I tried to play a movie clip that used
Quicktime. I allowed it to update itself, then it caused the same
trouble.
After doing the same procedure as listed above, I'm fixed again.

This may not be your trouble, but for me the villian program was
Quicktime.
Good Luck!

I too have experienced the curse of the R&R installer whenever I
played music from Windows Media Player or Yahoo! Music Jukebox.
However I did an adjustment which has so far remedied this plague.

1. Go to your control panel
2. Open User Accounts
3. Turn User Account Control off
4. Restart your computer

I am unsure of any security ramifications but I do know I am happy
with the results so far.
Cheers

The upside is the R&R scourge is gone, the downside is ......

User Account Control (UAC) is a feature in Windows that can help
prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. UAC does this by asking
you for permission or an administrator password before performing
actions that could potentially affect your computer's operation or
that change settings that affect other users. When you see a UAC
message, read it carefully, and then make sure the name of the action
or program that's about to start is one that you intended to start.
By verifying these actions before they start, UAC can help prevent
malicious software (malware) and spyware from installing or making
changes to your computer without permission.

Cheers

Fuck that noise.

R&R installer comes up when something goes wrong, generally a
corruption in the license, it can also happen with simple hardware
changes and sometimes even driver updates, sad, but true... You need
to update/re-new your licenses. If you are on Yahoo! Music or
Rhapsody this is simple, if you are using iTunes you need to contact
support and let them know so they can authorise a re-authentication of
your DRM without it hitting you in the nuts. DO NOT disable UAC unless
you know what you're doing and even then, DO NOT because it's there
for a reason and could mess up some installations of certain
software. Remember, disabling UAC doesn't allow programs to ask for
Administrative privileges so they are stuck at a user level, unless
you know how to right click and choose run as administrator.

I had this exact same problem, it seems to be limited to .WMA files.
Haven't found a solution, but did find a workaround by burning the
problem files onto a CD in audio format (used a RW CD), then ripping
them back in .MP3 format. Yes, huge pain in the ass, but the tracks
are now "unlocked" and play with no problems whatsoever. There may be
an easier way to convert the files, but this method worked for me.
I'll be avoiding .WMA format in the future, that's for sure.

I have found the solution to this problem:

Open Windows Media Player
Press "Alt" (If classic menu not displayed)

Click "Tools"
Click "Plug-Ins"
Click "Options"

Under the "Plug-Ins" tab:
1) Select "Audio DSP"
---> Uncheck all boxes (e.g. SSMS Audio Filter)
2) Select "Other DSP"
--> Uncheck all boxes

Apply changes
Restart computer

This worked for me and I have had no problems since.

I do not know if this will solve similar problems with all media players but I was experiencing the "R&R Installer" alert with other programs on my computer. By changing the Windows Media Player settings mentioned, all my other programs funtioned without further error.

Hope that this works for you too as it was truly annoying!

I had the same issue and found out this has to do with restricted usage rights applied to the wma files to prevent unauthorized version being deployed. The audio/ video file tries to go on the internet and refresh usage rights automatically. To correct the problem, do these steps:

- Open Windows Media Players
- Go to Tools | Options | Privacy tab
- Remove all checkmark from “Enhanced Playback and Device Experience”
- Click Apply and then OK
- Close Windows media player and restart your computer
- Try the same song again and you won’t get prompted for R&R installer.

Have a nice day!

YES AND I FOUND A FIX (Have a 64-bit Vista Machine)

Frustrated for hours finally got this to work!!!

*1. I ended all services that had to do with itunes or quicktime.
*** Right-click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage". Next go to
Services and look for them there.

*2. I took any itunes and quicktime startup programs off my startup
list.
*** Click on Windows Flag (Start Button) on the lower-left hand
corner. Type in the "Start Search" msconfig and hit enter. Next look
for itunes or quicktime update programs that start-up.

*3. Next I opened Windows Media Player 11 (WMP11) and unclicked and
media update programs or automatic updates for files.
*** Open WMP11 (hit ctrl-m to bring up Top Menu). Go to "Tools" then
"Options". On the "Player" tab uncheck "Add media files to the library
when played" Go-to the "Privacy" tab and uncheck everything. Go to the
"Library" tab and uncheck "Retrieve additional information from..."

*4. Almost done, go to C:\Windows\System32 and rename the
rrinstaller.exe file to rrinstaller_.exe

*5. Finally reboot your machine hit alt-ctrl-del and check the
services that are running. Make sure ituneshelper or any other
quicktime like program is not running.

Note: There is a program that runs mfpmp.exe that runs everytime I
download purchased protected music (DRM music). I believe this is the
program that starts rrinstaller.exe

Hope this helps!!!

and/or run the 'offending' program as Administrator.
So far, that alone has stopped the problem.

I too have encountered this problem, I have noticed, though, that most people are on Vista. i for on is on Windows 7. Not sure if this is an error over all the platforms of windows. Although I'm guessing so.

Not sure if this helps, but hopefully MS will fix it!
