Microsoft Word does not have a "Safe Mode". Can you please be a bit more
explicit and exact as to what problems you are seeing?

Thanks for your reply.
When I click on the icon for Microsoft Word (in Office XP
ver. 2002) I get the following message: "Microsoft Word
has encountered a problem and needs to close..."
1 Restart Microsoft Word and 2 Send error report.
Another message: "Word failed to start correctly last
time. Starting word in safe mode will help you correct or
isolate a start up problem in order to successfully start
the program. Some functionality may be disabled in this
mode. Do you want to start Word in safe mode?"
Yes. The program starts. The blue title bar at the top
of the window reads: "Microsoft Word (Safe Mode)"
Go to Help, About Microsoft Word, Disabled Items, Find
Message "There are no disabled items".
I'm not sure what to do next.

Hmmm ... okay, I stand corrected; I have never seen or heard that message
before. But as for fixing it, let's try a time-honored test. Search your
hard drive for all files named NORMAL.DOT and delete them, then reboot the
computer and try running Word again. What do you get then?

Richard,

I've never seen or heard of Word opening in Safe Mode either. However
since I only use Word when forced to do so, preferring as I do
WordPerfect, perhaps that should come as no surprise.

Try searching Word/Help for "safe mode" an see what that unravels. It seems
that there are some command switches - but having never used the utility, I
can't help further.

Mart,

As I said I never use Word. That however is just a polite way of saying I
loath Word.

I don't think this is quite the place to say what I really feel about Word
as there might be children and others that I might offend. :-)

Thanks for your reply.
Searching for "normal.dot" yields: 1 Normal.dot
(C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Template, 31 KB)
and 2 ~$Normal.Dot (a template). Deleting 1 and
rebooting does not change anything. Shall I also delete
~$Normal.Dot ?

Thanks for the referance to KB article:

This gives me good background, but I haven't fixed my
specific problem yet.

I used to use WordPerfect, but for some reason the CFO won't let me mandate
its use on our work network. So I was forced to adapt, improvise, overcome.
:-(

Fortunately all I need it for is either light work or to modify forms
created by other users.

Yep, kill that one too. That looks like a temporary copy that was created
but never erased, perhaps because Word or the PC locked up.

DJ, FWIW - A brand new "clean" installation of Word does not install a
normal.dot file, it doesn't even exist on the CD. But instead, it is
'generated' the very first time that Word is run and (apart from certain
built-in defaults - the Times Roman font for example) becomes
'country/computer/printer' specific. Hence, it can be deleted at any time
(particularly when it becomes corrupted!!) and a 'brand new' version will be
generated next time Word is run.

So if you've modified and 'created' your own personalised normal.dot
template AND subsequently delete it, it will revert to the 'default' version
described above. Thus, 'killing it' as suggested by Richard will not cause
any harm - it will just regenerate next time you open Word.

Still don't have the solution to your problem <g>

Mike,

I know what you mean - I used to use AmiPro and all the subsequent Lotus
derivatives, but eventually found nobody else could read my stuff<g> So
Bill stamped 'Word' onto my forehead and I've just learned to live (love?)
with it.

Thanks for your help!
OK: Normal.Dot and ~$Normal.Dot are deleted. ReBooted.
Click on Microsoft Word and start the loop: "Microsoft
word encountered a problem and needs to close." "send
report?" Yes. "Word failed to start correctly last
time...." Start in Safe Mode?" I answer yes to get out
of loop and into program.
Do I need to reinstall Microsoft Office XP ? Is the
registry messed up? How to fix it?

Thanks Mart. After deleting Normal.Dot, and Rebooting, I
still get the endless loop of Problem, Report, Start in
Safe Mode. (nothing disabled).
This problem began with a failed attempt to install an
additional hard drive. Maybe the installation software
twisted the registry? Is it possible to reinstall the
program without damaging the personal documents?

Probably the next best thing to try is a repair install. If you pop the
Office XP CD back in, it should detect that Office is already installed and
offer to repair or reinstall. Try the repair first. Your documents won't
be touched by the reinstall or repair.

You could try a 'Detect and Repair' - Word\Help drop-down menu - should
'Repair' the whole Office installation and has to be worth a try. Not sure
about Office 2002 but there *may* be other options in the 'Programs' menu.

So long as you've backed-up ALL of your Office documents - Outlook Address
Book too, if you use it (although they *shouldn't be* damaged/deleted) -
then I suppose you could even Uninstall and Re-install Office. Try the
Repair option first.
