We can go into the network settings for the local area connection,
enter the static ip along with netmask and gateway . We put the server
ip address in as the DNS.
Press ok and ok, and expect it to be done and static. Go back in and
both round buttons are set for Automatically Obtain !!
At a cmd prompt the ipconfig info shows this :
Ethernet adapter Server Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II
GigE (NDIS VBD Client)
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : (modified to protect) 00-1E-4F-
xx-xx-xx
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
So.... see the DHCP and autoconfiguration and the right
address......... but still not static.....
the guy who set this server up has never seen anything like this and I
have not either .
If we restart the server it stays on the .5 address. That at least is
good for now but I am afraid it might move someday . plus we just need
to know why this is happening.
If we try to run the EICW wizard it says we cannot because we have a
dynamic ip address. So we set it again, and the wizard will run. But
it still says dynamic.
Thanks for any suggestions. We do not want to install another network
card and I am afraid to uninstall the drivers to reinstall them since
it is the AD controller and I do not want to break anything AD .
Barre
i wondered if having dhcp someplace else could be a problem and
mentinoed it to the guy who installed but he said it is ok to have the
vpn router be the dhcp server. it has the dns of the sbs server setup
in it so the pc's get the proper dns info.
so the server does not have dhcp installed but he doen't think it
needs to.
this is the first time I have seen this probelm and the first time I
have seen sbs not be the dhcp server so maybe they are connected
thanks

He thinks to make the vpn part of the router work for remote clients
that it has to be the dhcp server. I told him I did not believe that
to be true and so I will install dhcp on the sbs and do the zone etc
then temporarily turn off dhcp at the router and redo the wizard and
see if that helps.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSES

We just installed DHCP on the server and it still has the same
problem. Previously we uninstalled the BroadcomACSuite BACS and
updated the driver for the gigabit card.
Anybody with a Dell Poweredge Windows 2003 Win 2003 SBS small business
server out there who has a problem with a static IP address being
dynamic?
NICs won't keep static IP addresses, and other strangeness

MERV, YES!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! It took a long time (BSOD when
removing the original Dell driver, and I found out I didn't have a
network card for the server so I had to endure agonizingly slow
restarts and shutdowns of 10 minutes each, and at first the old stuff
never cleanly removed, what a mess...) but it is fixed now.
Dell got me the newest driver, had me remove all references to the
Broadcom software, move all the OEM inf files out, and reinstall the
new driver. All good!!!
Here is what I will NOT do in the future: I will NOT remove the only
network card an SBS or other DC has.
And I will not go to a job without a PCI-X or PCI-E network card.
Preferably an Intel card so that the OS will be most likely to
recognize and use the card asap. I found out yesterday that the
Poweredge 1900's do not have PCI slots anymore...................so
all my trusty 3com and Intel PCI cards were useless.
THANKS AGAIN
