Pre-RWW setup user accts can’t log in

Greetings,
This one should be simple and thanks in advance your help. I've done
some digging looking for an answer, searched this site and haven’t found
anything yet.

I'm running SBS2003 Standard in a relatively new setup and testing RWW before
unleashing it to the users.

As Administrator using RWW from another location I can login OK, access
client computers no problem, everything seems to work beautifully. However
user accounts created prior to when I got RWW up and running can not.
I create new test users now and they can log in just fine. Doesn’t matter
which
type user template I use in the account create process. Other user accounts
that I created prior to getting RWW up and running can't login though.

When I say "getting RWW up and running" I have to explain. We're hosting our
public site externally, not through our ISP, not on our server. Our ISP uses
dynamic IP's and I recently set up a dynamic IP service w/ updater. then I
got RWW
running and am now testing. User accounts created prior to this point can't
login even
though they are members of the RWW group. Must be some little tweak to the
user accounts somewhere...?


The Error Message...
From IE on an XPPro box external to the network I specify the URL:
https://"mydomainame"/Remote/

I get:
https://scaportal01.selfip.net/Remote/logon.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fremote%2fDefault.aspx which is the RWW Login screen.

I enter the correct username and password for a qualified user account.
Those I've tried are all members of the RWW group.
Error message for invalid user shows up:
"The user name or password is incorrect. Verify that CAPS LOCK is not on,
and then retype the current user name and password. If you receive this
message again, contact your system administrator to ensure that you have the
correct permissions to use the Remote Web Workplace."

Hi Tom,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

From the description, I understand the issue to be: the user accounts that
are created before you get the RWW work can not logon to RWW. However
Administrator and the users that are created afterwards can log on to RWW
successfully. If I have misunderstood your concerns, please do not hesitate
to let me know.

Based on my experience, please check the info below:

Info 1:

AS I know, only the users in the Remote Web Workplace users security group
can access the RWW site. When we create the user accounts by using the SBS
Add Users wizard and also apply the user or mobile user templates to the
accounts, the accounts will be automatically added into the Remote Web
Workplace users group. Please double check if the user is not in the
"Remote Web Workplace Users" group:

1. Open ADU&C by running dsa.msc.
2. Navigate to MyBusiness/Users/SBSUsers.
3. In the right pane, right click the problematic user and click Properties.
4. Click "Member Of" tab.
5. Check whether "Remote Web Workplace Users" is in the list.
6. If not, please click Add and add the "Remote Web Workplace Users" group.
7. Test the issue again.

Info 2:

Please make sure that the problematic user accounts are created using the
SBS Add User Wizard:

1. Open Server Management.
2. Click Users node.
3. Click Add a User or Add Multiple Users.
4. Follow the wizard and use an existing template to create the user.

Info 3:

You can manually add the problematic user to the security group:

1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers.
2. Navigate to MyBusiness\Security Groups\.
3. Open the properties of 'Remote web workplace users' and then add the
user account into the group.
4. After doing this, can this user access the RWW site?

Info 4:

We may try running the Change User Permission wizard to add the Mobile User
Template for the problematic user account as following:

1. In Server Management, expand Standard Management.
2. Click Users and click Change User Permission.
3. In Change User Permission wizard page, click next.
4. Select Mobile User Template and select Replace any previous permissions
granted to the users.
5. Click next.
6. Click Add to add problematic user account to right pane.
7. Click next and click finish.
8. Try again.

Info 5:

This symptom occurs if the following conditions are true:

1. When the user tries to connect, the user receives a prompt to change
their password.
2. The user types the correct original password, types the new password,
and then clicks OK.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

1. The user's account has the "User must change password at next logon"
feature enabled.
2. The NetBIOS domain name does not match the left side of the DNS domain
name. For example, the DNS domain name is "example.local" and the NetBIOS
domain name is not "example."

If the above scenario addressed your issue, please check the following KB
to solve the problem:

Yes you do understand the issue.

Re: Info 1:
All users are members of the "Remote Web Workplace Users" group.

All users were created using the SBS Add User Wizard before RWW was
implemented.

User accounts created after RWW implemented were created using the
SBS Add User Wizard and work correctly.

Re: Info 3:
All users are members of the "Remote Web Workplace Users" group.
I removed a test user from the group and then added them again. This was not
a solution.

Re: Info 4:

I ran the Change User Permission wizard. I selected the appropriate template
for the user with the “Replace previous permissions” option. I did this for
mobile users as well as standard domain user templates. This was not a
solution.

VIA RWW
However as Administrator via RWW I went to a user account . Selected "User
must change password at next logon". Logged off RWW. I then restarted RWW and
tried to log in as the user. I received the "must change password” dialog. I

password. The next dialog rejected my password (current password) and
appeared to not allow the password change.

ON SITE
Then… I went on site. I logged in under the “current password”. It was
rejected. I logged in under the new password I had typed via RWW and it was
accepted. I went back off site.

VIA RWW
I went off site and tried logging in this user account w/ the “new password”
which was accepted “on site”. It was rejected.


With this information do you recommend I try the “workaround” mentioned in

“Users receive a "The user name or password is incorrect" error message if
they try to connect to a SBS 2003-based computer by using the Remote Web
Workplace feature” ) ???????

Thanks for your reply.

You can try the following to see if it helps:

1. Check if NetBIOS domain name does not match the left hand side of the
DNS domain name (for example, AD is "ADDomain.local", but netbios is
"Domain"). To find out the names, you can type "set" in a command prompt at
the server. You may find the following information:

USERDNSDOMAIN=This is the AD DNS name
USERDOMAIN= This is the netbios domain name

Good:
USERDNSDOMAIN=FOURTHCOFFEE.LOCAL
USERDOMAIN=FOURTHCOFFEE
Bad:
USERDNSDOMAIN=FOURTHCOFFEE.LOCAL
USERDOMAIN=COFFEE

2. Check if the primary group for the problematic user account is Domain
Users as following:

1) In Server Management Console, Expand Standard Management.
2) Click Users and Right-click the problematic user account and select
Properties.
3) In Properties page, in Member Of tab, you can set primary group.
4) To set it, you may select Domain Users and then click the button of Set
Primary Group.

If the issue still occurs, to narrow down the problem, would you please try
to delete a problematic user and then re-create the account to see if it
helps?

I used the SET command to find:
NetBIOS domain name matches AD DNS domain name, however, the
NetBIOS domain name is lowercase.
Example:
USERDNSDOMAIN=ABCDEF.LOCAL
USERDOMAIN=abcdef

Yes - The problematic user account Primary Group is Domain Users.

Via RWW as Administrator I removed the problematic user account (I left the
checkbox for home folder unchecked) and then recreated it.
I closed RWW session.
Started a new session trying to log in as recreated user.
Received same “user name or password is incorrect” error message.

Also - I do have 20 user accounts set up which have this problem so I am
hoping I don’t have remove and recreate the accounts and thus have them lose
the settings they have when they log in locally.

Another thing to add. I went on site and removed and created again the same
test user. I logged into and logged off a client computer.

Off site now I can login using this test user's password.

Is there a way I can fix this without removing the user and recreating the
accounts? Therea re about 20 users on the system. Also, by leaving the
"remove user directory" checkbox empty (during remove user account) what
exactly does this do. Will it maintain user settings when I recreate the
account?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your update.

From the current situation, you may need to remove the user accounts and
then recreating them. For the option "The user's home folder" do not be
checked when you right click the account and then select Remove User, it
will not delete the user data which saved in the users shared folders.

Thanks for your reply, Crina. I appreciate it.

I spent yesterday afternoon on site and deleted the user account from the
server (keeping the home folder). I then recreated it on the server. I then
went to the client computer and logged in under the new user account name.
The new user was added successfully.

There are 2 problems:
1. When I tried to start Oulook on the client it started to install but
stopped w/ error message (and this is from memory) "unable to
install...restart Outlook and try again...). There is a local copy of MS
Office Prof on this client computer, should I reinstall Outlook from those
disks or try to force an install from the server (how do I do that?)?

2. Logon from RWW - I can not log on from RWW w/ this new user, I get the
same error mentioned previously (this user is part of Remote Web Workplace
Users group). However I can log on RWW as Administrator. Then I choose to
connect to the new user's client computer. I am able to connect to the client
computer. At this computer's logon screen I then log on w/ the new user
credentials and I am able to access the computer as though I were on site. So
it seems the RWW password and the network password are not in synch? Maybe
Outlook has something to do w/ this?

To narrow down the problem, would you please help me collect the following
information?

1. Is the problematic client computer located on the LAN of SBS?
2. Have you added the client computer to SBS domain through running
http://servername/connectcomputer?

If you have added the client computer to SBS domain, for the Outlook issue,
you may need to do as following:

1. On client computer, remove Outlook 2003 as following:

1) Open control Panel.
2) Click Add or Remove Programs.
3) Click Remove on Microsoft Office Outlook 2003.
4) Log off the user.

2. On SBS:

1) Open Server Management.
2) Expand Standard Management and then click Client Computers.
3) Click Assign Applications to Client Computers.
4) Click Next on the wizard.
5) Add the problematic client computer and then click Next.
6) Select Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and then click Next.
7) Follow the wizard to finish it.

And then log on to client computer to install Microsoft Office Outlook 2003.

For the RWW issue:

1. Can you attach a screen shot of the issue to newsgroup?
2. Do you mean you can log on to RWW using administrator account on SBS and
then connect to the problematic client computer using the new user account
and password?
3. Can you access RWW using a good user account (the user that was created
afterwards you can log on to RWW) on the problematic client computer?
4. Can you access RWW using the new account on a good client computer?

To continue, I create a new user (call it Sue_remote) using the user
template on SBS. Then from off-site Sue_remote can log into RWW. Connect to
the client computer. Then log into the client computer as user Sue, and join
the domain, etc. as above.

4. Can you access RWW using the new account on a good client computer?

To narrow down the problem, would you please help me confirm the following
information?

1. Are you using Local administrator account to remove and reinstall
Outlook 2003?
2. Does the situation occur if you add Sue to local administrator security
group?
3. Do you mean Sue can log on to RWW in external network when you create
the account firstly, then you log on in LAN using Sue and then you can not
log on to RWW from external network using Sue. However you can use Sue
logon to client computer when you use Sue_remote to logon on to RWW from
external network and then click Connect to client computer?
4. I can not find the screen shot you have attached, can you attach it
again?

To answswer your questions:


1. Are you using Local administrator account to remove and reinstall
Outlook 2003?

2. Does the situation occur if you add Sue to local administrator security
group?

3. Do you mean Sue can log on to RWW in external network when you create
the account firstly, then you log on in LAN using Sue and then you can not
log on to RWW from external network using Sue. However you can use Sue
logon to client computer when you use Sue_remote to logon on to RWW from
external network and then click Connect to client computer?

4. I can not find the screen shot you have attached, can you attach it

It is a yellow box with the text:

It sounds like things are looking difficult for this user/client computer.
It may be easier to
just wipe out the drive and reinstall everything. All the data has been
moved over to the server except for the user's Outlook files which I am
unable to access because of this problem. The password issue really puzzels
me though.

Thanks for your update.

To narrow down the problem, would you please help me collect the following
information?

1. Does the situation only occur on the user account you created before you
get the RWW work and then delete it and recreate it?
2. Does the situation occur on the user account created afterwards you can
log on to RWW?
3. Can you remove Outlook using Domain Administrator?

Currently, we can try the following steps:

1. Please try removing the problematic computer from Domain and then rejoin
it to the domain. To do that, please perform the following steps:

1) In client computer, right-click My Computer and then select Properties.
2) In Computer Name tab, click Change and the change the computer from
Domain to Workgroup.
3) Reboot the machine.
4) Log on as a local administrator account
5) In client computer, open IE and run http://servername/connectcomputer
6) Follow the wizard to finish.

2. Please try a clean boot on client computer to see how thing goes:

1) Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.
2) In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.
3) Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.
4) Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services. Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.
5) Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.
6) After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.
