Hi,

The network is a SBS2003 Server with Win XP Pro clients freshly installed.
everything was going along fine for months, then suddenly 'Page cannot be
displayed' errors on 'some' clients. Nothing has changed on the clients
machines and it is only affecting some of them.

On the clients that can't browse, they can ping AND access https sites but
any http site 'page cannot be displayed'.

server is supplying clients with ips etc. they are completely stock
standard fresh installs so really curios why some clients are still working
fine but others have stopped. everything else is fine.

Puzzled!

Charles

Hi Charles,

Can you post the ipconfig/all from the server and one from a client?
Standard or Premium? How are you connecting to the internet?

Hi Marina,

The server is SBS2003 standard, as mentioned the client can access
https://whatever sites just hangs on http://sites. can get to site via ip
address. funny that workstations that are ok have EXACTLY the same
configuration.

sorry further to previous reply, our connection is an adsl modem connected to
the internet nic. static ip address is provided to router and the internet
ethernet ip on the router is 192.168.1.1
this connects to the server by the internet nic 192.168.1.5

Hi Charles,

Look good. What are you using to connect to the internet? Can you rerun
CEICW? Have you checked those clients for spyware?

Hi Marina,

Yes i re-ran the connection wizard, only hiccup it came up with was it
wanted to install a wierd gateway for the internet nic which ended up as
192.168.1.1 (the router).

I have just found out that everyone installed spywareguard! I have removed
it to test but no difference. but the same problem exists that the pcs that
CAN access the internet have spywareguard installed also??? this is really
starting to confuse me.

If it was all or none then i would be more comfortable.

As a test i dropped my notebook into the network, previously it would grab
an IP address and be on the net when it booted. But it too can't connect. I
know that this doesn't have any problems because when i bring my notebook
back to my work or home it connects via the other networks fine (so narrowed
it down to the server??).

Thanks for replying!

Hi Charles,

What do you mean with that weird gateway that is supposed to be 192.168.1.1?

Look at your hosts files for any wierd entries. I use Ad-aware, Spybot
Search and Destroy, www.moosoft.com 's The Cleaner, and Hijack This to
clean up stuff. Things may not work after a few hours of cleanup so
format hard drive is almost always less hassle.

thanks jim, i tried that all was in order. but because my laptop cant
connect when it is placed on this network but will when it is placed on my
home network makes me think it is a server issue, which brings me back to why
2 pcs on the network remain unaffected by this problem.

Sorry, when i ran the internet connection wizard on the server it grabbed all
the existing settings however when it came to the internet nic it wanted to
have it as

IP 192.168.1.5
Sm 255.255.255.0
GW 203.210.XXX.XXX (cant remember)

so i changed the gateway back to 192.168.1.1 for the internet nic once
completed

Hi Charles,

That is weird and shouldn't happen. What exactly are you using to connect to
the internet? Has that thing DHCP turned on or something?

Hi Marina,

Firstly, thanks for replying to me :)

The router is a dlink adsl router. it gets a static ip from the isp and has
port forwarding enabled on sbs2003 common ports to go to the server. i have
defined it's internal ip as 192.168.1.1

i have changed the servers dns entry on the internet nic to 192.168.1.1 from
192.168.0.27 (ip of other nic) but that made no difference.

the thing that kills me is the fact that it was all working before and now
only some clients can't connect. but as stated, previously i could attach my
laptop to the network (without logging on) and gain internet access, now i
can't. however bring the laptop home and it works (i'm using it now). so
this gets me thinking that;
a. it isn't client related (host file etc) because this notebook works fine
b. its not an internet connection issue (as the server gets web pages fine,
other pcs get access fine and the pcs that cant can still ping and access
https sites)

so narrowing it down it appears as though the server is 'denying' http
access through itself (but only to some clients)

this is really starting to freak me out and i'm getting the obvious 'whens
it going to be fixed already' questions.

any help is greeeeaaaaatly apprecaited!!!

Hi Marina,

I solved the problem! It was the MTU size on the local network had been
changed by a cisco vpn client install.

i have reset the mtu back to default and all is happy again.

Thanks for your trouble.

Hi Charles,

Great! I am going to hate that Cisco VPN client. Thanks for reporting back.
