I have read in this newsgroup that the Administrator account uses up one CAL in a "per user" license environment. I can't believe that this would be the case. Doesn't that effectively reduce the amount of available CAL's that come with the server to four? I have a client with five users. They occasionally remote in with their home PC's, which is why they'll be using the "per user" scheme. I remote (RDP) in to check on backups and perform server maintenance as the Administrator. If someone chooses to use the "per device" scheme the server itself wouldn't be counted, would it? Can someone please clarify this?

In practice-> I haven't seen that logons on the server affect the CAL usage.

In theory-> CAL = Client Access License. If it's a *CLIENT* accesing the
server... it cannot mean the server accesing the server. Just don't send me
the lawers this way. :-)

My $0.02,

Are you saying that the SBS Server doesn't restrict access to client that
log in? Say I am running the SBS 2003 with 5 CALS, and I have 5 users
logged in and running, what happens whe the 6th user logs on???
Not trying to get something for nothing, I just want the Administrator to be
logged in and still have 5 users...
Thanks

No... I'm just saying that AFAIK you are not consuming CALs when you logon
in the actual server.

SBS *does* restrict the number of connections to the server... I'm just
talking about the actual server session.

RWW over the internet is going to either be used by an account that needs a
user CAL associated with it, or the machine that is accessing the RWW will
need a device CAL. The moment that a user account is distinguished over the
internet, that is when the CAL is needed.

You can have up to two users or devices administering the server software
without needing CALs. So, basically if the administrator account only
administers the server then a CAL is not needed. But if the administrator
account is used as a regular work account then it will need a CAL. You can
rename the administrator account and that renamed account has the same
restrictions.

You can reassign a CAL from one account to another as long as it is
permanent. This should handle the corruption problem.

These are my personal understandings of the EULA (I am not an official
licensing representative). For things that do not make sense or things you
want to confirm, I would imagine that the best thing to do is call MS and
speak to a licensing official.
