I apologize. I'm new to these Newsgroup forums and I took a quick glance at
your post right before I responded. I saw your header,[cross-posted to IE
General] and thought you were referring to me,lol. I feel silly now. I know
now what that means-(that's referring to the fact that you also answer
questions in IE General) and in my last thread I started in Windows Vista
General, titled "What has happened to my task manager?", I made some comments
and expressed my opinion about using Newsgroups in Windows Live Mail and I
also mentioned IE8 and all this together along with your [cross-posted to IE
General] header, I thought you were referring to me as the one who
cross-posted and I was also a little on the defensive after my experience
with my last thread-and I am operating on very little sleep. I'm so sorry.
But,I do need help with the issue of links in emails opening in multiple
internet explorer windows. Please help.
Thanks A lot,
Tonya
Thanks Again,
Tonya

What do you mean by,"Why did you drop the cross post to
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general? I just started my posts in Vista
Forums under Windows Live Mail Newsgroup section and and I got no responses
all day. I thought I did something wrong or something. I didn't think I was
allowed to cross-post, so I kept posting under the Windows Live Mail section.
I know that on Vista Forums, it is against rules to cross-post and I also
couldn't find an Internet Explorer Newsgroup section in Vista Forums.

What happens if you open 6 more IE windows and click on a link in WLMail?
How many tabs do you have open in the IE windows?

When it is messed up, a link in one email will open up into a tab into each
internet explorer window that is currently open and when it does this, in
addition to opening into a tab in each currently opened window, it will also
open up into it's own separate window-I forgot to mention this. And, a lot of
times, the link will open up in two tabs in one of the windows in addition to
a single tab in all the other windows. As a result of this, my computer
almost freezes up and I end up with a lot of copies of the same webpage in a
tab in all the windows and also in its own separate window. And it's not site
specific like Winston suggested it might be. I shop off of ebay and I have
subscribed to email alerts about products I'm interested in. Well, right now,
when I click on a link in those emails, the link is opening up into a single
tab in one window, when like yesterday or the day before, it opened up into a
tab in all the windows. So, it is working OK right now. I'm sure it will
probably mess up sometime later today or some other time. I don't know why it
is not doing it right now or today. Yes, it usually happens when I already
have several tabs already opened up in each window. But, I will keep on
opening up more IE windows today and clicking on links in emails and see if
it happens again. And, I'll post back when it does.
BTW, how can I respond in this thread in Newsgroups in Windows Live Mail. I
tried to, but I get a delivery status notification failure from
postm...@mail.hotmail.com. How do I set up Windows Live Mail so that my
replies will go through? I'm having to respond on the Microsoft website now
and there is no Internet Explorer section on Vista Forums site.
Thanks,
Tonya

I'm afraid to uninstall IE8 because I'm afraid I might lose something
or it will mess something else up. It's only links in Windows Live Mail
that opens in every internet explorer window. Links in Google sidebar,my
online ISP email, and every other kind of link does not do this.
And,you know what? It's actually not doing it right now. I have 4
internet explorer windows up right now and I clicked on a link in a few
emails and each of them opened up into a single Internet Explorer
Window. From time to time,it will work normally like it is right now
but, then it will go back to opening up into multiple windows.
I have a feeling it could be some kind of security issue. I do have
Norton Internet Security. I'm thinking there has got to be some type of
settings I can also change in Internet Options in IE8, Norton Internet
Security, or in Windows Live Mail that will fix this. I get the feeling
that these links get confused as to which window to open up into,
especially when I have about 10 Internet Explorer windows opened up.
Does that make sense?
But, I'll consider uninstalling and reinstalling IE8 (because I do like
it better than IE7), if there are no other solutions to this. And, I
want to be sure it won't mess my computer up if I uninstall it. IE8 was
an Automatic Windows Update for me. So, what would uninstalling it do? I
want to wait for other answers first before I do that.
Thanks,
Tonya

PA Bear,
I've started having the problem again tonight. I've discovered that
links in Windows Mail also open up into tabs in all existing windows(a
single link in a single email opens into a tab in each window and 2 tabs
in one of the windows along with opening up in its own window!). So, I
guess this is not just a Windows Live Mail issue.
I am currently using Norton Internet Security(2008 version through my
NetZero dial-up ISP) and it is current(up to date). I just recently got
broadband internet(10mbps) through Charter on 5/24/2009 and I have kept
my dial-up internet and I'm using the Norton Internet Security provided
through NetZero. I'm only using Windows Firewall(no other firewall). The
only anti-spyware other than defender is with Norton Internet Security.
When I installed IE8 back on May 3rd through Automatic Windows Updates,
I was using Avanquest, System Suite 9 antivirus software(because Norton
Internet Security was deleting my restore points, see thread I started
titled, "I keep losing my restore points" if interested, under Windows
Vista Performance and Maintenance Newsgroup). But, before I installed
System suite 9, I think either I uninstalled or disabled Norton(not sure
which one). I do know at one point, I uninstalled Norton, but, not sure
exactly when and at what point during that time.
My Gateway laptop computer did come with a trial version of Norton and
I used it between November and January. And as soon as the trial ended,
I uninstalled that, and then installed the Norton provided through my
NetZero ISP. I did just get an email from NetZero 3 weeks ago saying
that the Norton I have may not be compatible with IE8 and that I might
need to request the 2009 disc although there are no known issues yet
that they have heard of.
Also, I didn't set up Windows Live Mail and Windows Mail until after I
got broadband internet from Charter on May 24, 2009. It was only after
that, that I downloaded my email to Windows Live Mail and Windows Mail,
and I am still using the email service I have through NetZero dial-up. I
don't know if this has anything to do with my problem or not.
As far as resetting IE settings-I would rather not do that. I do not
want to lose all my history add-ons, etc.-That would be throwing the
baby out with the bathwater!
Because, after I was to do that, I would have never known what add-on
etc. was causing this problem. I could provide a screen shot of all my
add-ons if you like-would that help? Is there some type of settings
under Internet Options I could change?
I will try the Internet Explorer with no add-ons and Safe Mode with
Networking to see what happens, but not tonight. I just wanted to get
all this other info put out that you requested.
I don't have any restore points available before IE8, because I
installed Service Pack 2 a couple days ago and it removed the previous
restore points except for one. I used the one remaining to go back to
the restore point prior to Sevice Pack 2 because service pack 2 disabled
Google. When I tried to use Google after installing Service Pack 2,
Google gave me a message that said something to the effect: "Your
network is not connecting."-something like that, even though my internet
was clearly working and I could go onto other websites. My startpage
wouldn't load either at the time. So, I guess I will have to start a
thread about that. I hope this info I just provided helps!
Thanks A lot,
Tonya

I need to clarify something. It's not just doing it with links in
Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail. I get computer forum feeds through my
Google Sidebar, and I just clicked on a Vista Forums link, and it opened
up into a tab in 4 of my IE8 windows-I have about 10 IE8 windows opened
up right now. I thought I remembered it doing it before, but, I wasn't
certain. Could this have something to do with my broadband internet that
I have had for only a month? Because, I don't remember it doing this
when I had dial-up internet? I have had highspeed internet service only
since 5/24/2009, but, I have had IE8 since 5/03/2009. I don't think
links in emails etc. were opening in tabs in my existing IE windows when
I had dial-up internet. And the speed of my internet through Charter is
10 mbps. This is a mess, I know and a very complicated issue. Maybe
we'll eventually figure it out. I wonder what the common denominator
might be between me and the original poster(2tallNY)? If he/she would
come back on here, we could compare our computers to see what's in
common that could be causing this. Is there anyway of finding him or
her?
Thanks,
Tonya

t-4-2,
Well, IE8 was in automatic updates, but, I chose to install it because
I wanted it installed. When it was available in Automatic Updates, I
went ahead and clicked the install button and it took a good 2-3 hours
to download and install at the time(5/03/2009) because I had dial-up
internet then.
The reason I chose to install it at the time is because I was having
problems with IE7 such as: IE7 windows were becoming black, distorted,
unresponsive, and they would close out by themselves resulting in me
having to restart my computer. IE8 fixed all of that like I thought it
would. So, I'm afraid to uninstall IE8 and go back to those problems I
was having with IE7. You see? My problems were a lot worse then. I
actually have some screen shots of whay my IE7 windows looked like when
they were black or distorted.
Usually, the IE7 windows would close themselves out when this happened
or I would have to restart my computer. So, it's a definite no, I will
not go back to IE7. There's got to be another fix. Maybe I'll just
uninstall IE8, redownload it, and install it again-that might work. But,
I want to make sure I do it right this time. Maybe I just have a bad
install of IE8?
Thanks,
Tonya

continued the crosspost this time so I'm able to see & reply to you.
Ron should be able to assist you with any continuing problems, Tonya. Just
remember to continue the crossposting when you reply to his posts. You do
NOT reply to this explanatory post!
COMMENTARY:
You have quite an amazing history of installed/uninstalled "internet
security suites," which may be responsible for the unusual/unexpected
behavior you're seeing in IE8 (and, I suspect, Vista SP2).
Issue #1 => While your computer came with a Norton free trial preinstalled
and while you did uninstall the free trial before you installed the Norton
freebie from your ISP (Netzero), you did not run the Norton Removal Tool
before installing the ISP-freebie.
Issue #2 => The preinstalled Norton free trial /may/ have expired before you
installed the ISP-freebie. This suggests the distinct possibility that you
were running without a fully-functional, fully-updated anti-virus
application for an indeterminate period of time and may have picked up a
hijackware infection.
Issue #3 => You installed Avanquest System Suite 9 (freebie from
Charter.net?) due to a Norton-related System Restore problem (see Issue #1
above) but you may not have uninstall the Norton/ISP freebie before you
installed the Avanquest suite. Even if you had, you neglected to run the
Norton Removal Tool. The fact that both security suites were installed and
running in the background when you installed IE8 could be one of the reasons
you're having bizarre problems with IE8.
Issue #4 => Nowhere in your previous replies to this thread did you state
that you'd uninstalled the Avanquest suite yet. Even if you have, I know
that Avanquest applications don't uninstall "cleanly" either so the
Avanquest "leftovers," working in conjunction with a "dirty" install of the
Norton/ISP freebie, is only adding to your problems (e.g., a "horked"
install of SP2?).
Issue #5 => You've maintained your Netzero dial-up connection since you
became a broadband (Charter) subscriber:
QED: If you're connected via broadband (Charter), will the Norton freebie
from Netzero be able to update?
QED: If you're connected via dial-up (Netzero), will/would the Avanquest
freebie (from Charter?) be able to update?
==========================
If I was tasked with fixing your computer (in person) & given Issues #1
through #4 (and, possibly, #5) above, I would take you back to square one by
(a) backing up your personal data, (b) formatting the hard-drive, and then
(c) doing a clean install of Vista (SP1, I assume). Good luck to you and
Ron.

<SNIP>
PA Bear,
That wasn't me who started this thread on June 04, 2009-it was started by
2TallNY. My user names are Tonya in my Windows Live Mail, TGL on Vista
Forums, and TGL on the Microsoft website where I answered a couple of times.
2TallNY is the person who started this thread on June 4th (2 weeks ago)-not
me. I only jumped in when performing a search for my email links problem in
Vista Forums on Saturday, June 20th-that's when I ran across this thread
started by 2TallNY. I responded to 2TallNY by saying," Yes, I'm having the
same problem. It's so annoying!................. (I wish that person would
come back on here so we can compare our computers to see what the common
denominator might be between the 2 that's causing this problem.) As of this
morning, all my posts were appearing only in the Windows Live Mail newsgroup
version of this thread and not in the Internet Explorer General one. So, do
I need to copy and paste my missing posts into the Internet Explorer General
Version of this thread?
And, your assumptions about when and at what points I installed and
uninstalled the trial of Norton, my Norton from NetZero, and the Avanquest
software are wrong. Please go back and reread my replies to you-I gave dates
of when I did all these things-very explanatory.
But, the free trial of Norton (November-January) did not expire before I
installed the Norton through my NetZero dial-up ISP and it (does work)
through my Charter Highspeed internet connection-it is up to date. So, I was
never without protection. True, even though I uninstalled Norton trial
before installing Norton ISP version, I didn't use the Norton removal tool.
(Avanquest System Suite 9 was software that came with the Lexmark printer I
purchased in November). I installed it on 5/02/2009 the day before I
installed IE8 due to losing restore points with Norton at the time. I know
that I either diabled Norton or uninstalled Norton before installing
Avanquest on 5/02/2009. I didn't have Charter Highspeed internet until
5/24/2009. No, I haven't uninstalled the Avanquest System Suite 9 Software,
but it is completely disabled right now. And before installing or reenabling
Norton after after acquiring highspeed internet service on 5/24/2009, I
disabled Avanquest. The only firewall I have running right now is Windows
Firewall and the only antivirus/antispyware is Norton and Windows defender.
But, the Norton Internet Security that I received from my NetZero dial-up
ISP is working and does update through my Charter highsppeed internet
connection and is up to date.
I don't know if you caught this in my last post to you in (Windows Live Mail
desktop newsgroup), but, I don't remember having this problem before I had
highspeed internet. I didn't get Charter highspeed (10 mbps) until
5/24/2009. Could it have something to do with my highspeed internet service
that is making links open up into multiple IE8 windows?
Thanks,
Tonya, TGL on Vista Forums, and TGL on Microsoft Communities Site

If you choose to post any more replies to this thread, please continue the
crosspost to IE General and WLMail newsgroups.
To avoid confusion, never "hijack" an existing thread: Always begin a new
thread in the appropriate newsgroup about /your/ problems, even if they
appear to be similar to someone else's.

<snip>
I was having the (exact same problem) as the original poster (2TallNY)-links
in emails are opening in multiple browser windows, so I did not hijack the
thread. So, apparently, I am not the only one experiencing this issue with
IE8. You may not expect me to respond to you anymore in this thread, but, I
had to respond to your last post because your assumptions about when and if
I installed and uninstalled my Norton and Avanquest software were not
correct, so I had to respond to you to clarify all of that to make sure that
you or anyone else) had the correct information to be able to help me.
Now, according to you, you think my problem has everything to do with my
Norton and Avanquest software (in particular, the way and when I uninstalled
them and reinstalled them, etc. and I should have used Norton Removal tool,
etc.), and as you said, if you were helping me in person with my computer,
you would just have me perform a clean install because you think somewhere
along the lines, I got hijacked by a virus, malware, etc.
Well, short of a clean install, what do you recommend? I was thinking of a
not so drastic measure such as reinstalling IE8 or/and reinstalling Norton
first. Because I believe I may just have a bad install of IE8 considering
the fact that I had downloaded it and installed it through automatic windows
updates when I just had dial-up internet. And, NetZero sent me a message a
few weeks ago saying that the Norton 2008 version I have may not be
compatible with IE8, but they have not heard of any incompatibilities as of
yet and they recommended that I request the Norton 2009 disc. (But, before I
do this, I would like to know the proper way of uninstalling and
reinstalling IE8). And, in my last post to you, I asked you if the links
opening in multiple IE windows could have anything to do with my highspeed
internet considering the fact that I wasn't experiencing this when I was
using dial-up.
Thanks,
Tonya

Also, under Tools, Options, Connection, the first box should be checked,
and the second box unchecked.
If all that checks out, but you still have the problem, the account may be corrupted.
Delete the account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.
Note that it is customary here to write in standard English, which
includes not locking down your Caps Lock key. Thanks.

WLM copy all the files to the directory (H:\Email\Luciano\)
But when i try to open it again it's says ( impossible to open, the calendar
is damaged) so i need to modifie the Store root and add "%USERPROFILE%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\"
When i change the directory to an USB device it works,
I had a look all over the web and nobody as the solution

I've not used any antivirus software nor security suite, I rely on user
level privileges.
Any ideas what might be the reason and how to fix it?
> When I click a link in e-mail (Outlook 2003),
Which email application are you actually using. You're asking about
Outlook, but you are using the browser - NOT an email program - and you are
posting in a newsgroup dedicated to peer-to-peer user support of Windows
Live Mail. But it sounds like your problem may really be with IE8. At any
rate, it has nothing to do with WLMail.
So I'm confused!
Could you please post back here IF you are really asking about Windows Live
Mail. If you are asking about Outlook, please post in one of the many
newsgroups or forums that are dedicated to Outlook. You might start here
and ask for further directions:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.general
Or, since you are using a browser:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.outlook.general
or
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general
It usually is not a good idea to "hijack" a 2-month-old post. It's best to
start a new thread and give it a descriptive Subject so that it will attract
the attention of readers who might know about your problem.
Good luck!
