Is there away to fix this? I don't like to use "Catch up" because it marks
all posts as read. Also, one might say "if it starts doing that, just
restart OE". However, the problem I am having is that this possible bug
hides the few most recent posts, so I wouldn't know there were new posts
unless I scroll up every single time I click on a group to really see if
there were new posts. Having to scroll every single time is annoying.
Note: I have the preview pan turned off to avoid virus laden messages that
might exploit IE, which OE uses.
I am using Outlook Express version 6.00.2900.2180 on XP Pro with SP2.
Thank you...

Probably unrelated, but you are not running the latest version of OE. Please
visit Windows Updates.

I have "Show all Messages" selected, but I don't like grouping messages by
conversation, so I didn't check it.

I unchecked that. It was set to get 1000 headers at a time.
Also, I found that restarting OE doesn't solve the problem. The number of
hidden posts has grown now to 39. So it's something that persist from one
session to the next, and I mean by that the number of hidden posts, it grows
continuously, even after restarting OE. "Catch up" fixes this problem, and
it seems that it resets the number of hidden posts to 0. Compacting messages
does not fix it. Reset and Delete messages do fix the problem, but the
messages have to be redownloaded.
It does not set the top row to a specific message, but the top message is
shifted by how many new posts are posted. The group that I have the most
problems with is:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.vb.general.discussion
I use the news server above.
Note: I use Outlook XP for my email, and OE as a newsreader.
Are all the newsgroups that this happens in msnews? You could try two
things, both of which will require to resubscribe to the individual groups.
The account may be damaged. Go to Tools | Accounts and remove the account.
Reboot and then reenter the account info.
And, you may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages from the old identity and
delete it.

I use mostly msnews. For some reason my ISP newsserver, cox.net, does not
get all the messages. It misses messages that come from emails that end with
"@discussions.microsoft.com", so I was not seeing these posts until I
switched to msnews.
