How often do you compact a folder or folders?

1b. Move 99% of your messages in your Inbox folder to other local OE
folders, too.
2. Write down the location of your identity's store
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain).
3. Close OE.
4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to your store folder, find & delete the
files Outbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, and Deleted Items.dbx.
To avoid such problems in the future:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm
- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.
- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:
<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

If you find that the behavior persists in OE, you may have a corrupt
identity. I can give you instructions on how to create a new identity.
I would NOT bypass the Recycle Bin or OE's Deleted Items folder, Stan! As I
posted in my reply to your other thread, it sounds like that machine may
have some serious issues.
You post using a WinXP SP2 machine: Is it the machine in question here?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?
Has a Symantec/Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
machine (e.g., a free trial that was preinstalled when you purchase the
machine)?
[It's "Robear" please.]

Not a problem, although you did not mention the Recyle Bin in your post to
OE6 newsgroup and you did not mention OE in your post to WinXP Help &
Support. Both may be pieces of the same puzzle, hence my crosspost to Help
& Support and my reply to your other thread in Help & Support.
[BTW, WinXP Help & Support newsgroup was /intended/ to be about Start | Help
& Support, not generic help & support for WinXp. For the latter, post to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup.]

You might delete something in error. Better to have the deleted items in
Deleted folder or Recycle Bin and not need them than the other way around!
(I just replied to a user in another newsgroup who Shift+Deleted a file and
now he needs it for work!)
Also, you might be tempted to ignore what's already in Deleted folder and
Recycle Bin: Why clog your machine with unneeded files?

ANY of the above (including Spybot Tea Timer and Ad-Aware's Ad-Watch, if
enabled) might be causing the deleted messages/files to reappear!

Is it all deleted messages that come back or some?
When you compact copies of all Outlook Express folders before
complaction are placed in the Recycle Bin. It is possible to restore
these to Outlook Express. It sounds unlikely that you would do this but
please check that you are not doing this. When compacting is taking
place do you get any messages asking whether you want to Allow or Not
Allow some action to take place?
Have you tried manually compacting Outlook Express before you are
prompted to allow automatic compaction? Manual compaction gives you more
control over the process and defers automatic compaction for another 100
openings of Outlook Express.
In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File,
Work Offline followed by File, Folder, Compact All. Do not attempt to
interupt or stop the process until it has completed. Close Outlook
Express when it has completed.
After compacting check your Outlook Express folders are as they should
be. Then select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select
Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More
Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore
point. Run Disk Defragmenter.
Do you see any deleted messages returning other than those left by you
in the Deleted Items folder at the time you compacted?

Hope this helps.

Conclusion -might as well use Shift + Delete for unwanted messages
rather have to think which type of message is being deleted.
Oops I can hardly Bear the thought I might get the wrong one <EBG>!

Yes

This does not always happen so I really don't know what comes back but it
is a lot.
As I reported, now that I followed Robear's suggestions and delete with
bypassing the Deleted Folder and the Recycle Bin
I am no longer getting back any deleted items.
Thanks for your efforts.
